Okay so I'm watching the new Hulk Hogan DVD set and I got to the Hogan/Giant match from Road Wild in 96. I haven't watched this match in quite a few years.
Well anyways I'm noticing that Bobby Heenan sounds drunk off his ass. What was the deal with this? Anyone else notice this or know if he really was drunk or what?
It just seemed really strange to me.

Well on this occassion he's slurring his words left and right, then eventually he's just quiet for a long time. Almost like he was told to stop talking. He even calls The Giant "Andre" at one point before going "Not Andre, I uh...." and then a little more stammering before just getting cut off.

I think the thing is that he was supposed to sound flustered because all throughout the course of the show, he'd been making comments that made Shiovane and Dusty question his loyalties to WCW.

I would say it is highly likely that he was indeed drunk. Going to Sturgis was the biggest party those boys ever saw while with WCW, and yes, having witnessed a remarkably drunk Scott Hall the night before Road Wild '97 and a drunken Dusty Rhodes in Casper, WY, the Monday after Hog Wild '96, I don't think its much of a stretch to think that Brain might've been imbiding that night.

In his first book he tells a good story about Hogg Wild.
The announcers are walking to their broadcast position and the bikers clap for them. Heenan waves to them. Dusty whipsers to him, "I thought you were a heel?" Heenan says back to Dusty, "Not when we're stationary and they have rocks. We wave to them."

I don't think he was drunk it's just that he didn't care anymore. He makes mention in his books that after he arrived in WCW and saw how ass backwards it was and that nobody cared for his imput that why should he care anymore. He got a good paycheck and insurance and that's all he wanted. Kurt Angle talks about wrestling with a "broken freaking neck". Bobby worked with a broken neck for about 10 years.

And for those commenting on Heenan "not caring anymore," I'm not saying you're wrong but please go back and listen to him during this instance. The man sounds drunk, plain and simple. He's trying to get across points and work the match but he's having a very hard time doing so.

Something else I've noticed about Heenan's commentary in WCW, he had this habit of calling wrestlers by their WWF names a lot. Like the Andre thing just mentioned, I know he called Meng "Haku", on the Ric Flair DVD in the Sting match, he almost called Sheri "Sensational" before he corrected himself and said "Sensual", on this Road Warriors match for Nitro on WWE 24/7 online, he called them "the Legion of Doom" (which although basically correct, I don't think they wanted them called that). And I'm thinking he called him "Mr. Perfect" at some point too.

That whole Hog Wild crap never peaked my interest. But I have heard other Bobby commentary and you can tell he just didn't care. But now I will watch this and listen to a drunk Heenan lol.

In a bit of irony he was not drunk during the priod when he was doing the drunk gimmick. You rember when he would bring the drink out to the ring with him, do a move take a drink,do a move take a drink,do a move take a drink,do a move do a move take a drink, take a drink, Good stuff.

If I worked for WCW, I'd probably be drunk all the time.
