It was a good ppv, and I do wonder why they didn't run with the ultimate survival match concept. The problem with Survivor Series in recent years, and one of the reasons I think that they toyed with dropping it, was that the concept of "teams of five strive to survive" was no longer a big deal to an audience conditioned to want to see big title matches on PPVs and used to six man/eight man tag matches being used on Raw to build forthcoming PPVs. It no longer seems such a big deal as it did in 1990 to have so many top stars combining.
However, if you throw in the Survival match at the end, and the team that wins then has to square off against each other at the December PPV for a title shot at the Royal Rumble, then perhaps you give the Survivor Series a point.
Always loved the Survivor Series but this would give it something to freshen it up, by resurrecting an old idea.

They say it's a hard thing to promote, unlike an event with title matches.
I always thought that was wrong, promote it as the top guys teaming up for the only time all year, cut back on matches bigger than tag teams the rest of the year, it makes it unique and marketable.

All the Survivor Series up until 92 were fantastic. Iam not sure bout last decade however 1995 is my all time favorite (the wild card match and Bret VS Diesel were off the page) 1996 was a good event and 1998 although not the classic format (and the first year without the classic format) is considered the best of all time. However from 1992 on wards they did try and put more and more emapisis on making it just another PPV rather than 'Survivor Series' with more emphasis on the main events or one on one matches on the show.

Thats' also one of the reasons that they have been non and off through the years with King Of The Ring tournament type PPVs don't sell/draw as good as the other PPVs. Which is a shame as Survivor Series and King Of The Ring were two of the highlights of the WWF/E year and not just another PPV.

King of the Ring as well, have a title match, and put, you know, over people in the tournament, and it's not a hard sell.
Say they just have the semi finals and finals, have at least one of the semis a match people would pay for anyway, or strongly hint at what the final will be.

One of my favorite PPVs as a kid. Seeing it later, hasn't aged as well as I recall. Firstly, the making of the Ultimate Survival teams. Always found it odd how they just kind of went to one side or the other, mostly the heel side, without any explanation on why that should be.
We know now, mainly, to have a ton of heels for Hogan and Warrior to mow down, Tito is just there to keep up appearances.
The eliminations come fast and furious and some other things bother me.
1. Tornado is made to look like a total chump. The IC champ, pinned clean in the center of the ring. I believe Perfect had actually won the title off Tornado at this point, but it hadn't played out on TV yet.
2. Bret Hart losing, just because he's Bret Hart.

I've seemed to have forgotten how they decided who was on which team for the Ultimate Survivor match. I know that the survivors were on the team. But did they just admit we're sticking the remaining good guys against the bad guys?
I mean this was a 5 on 3 ultimate survivor match!?!?

However from 1992 on wards they did try and put more and more emapisis on making it just another PPV rather than 'Survivor Series' with more emphasis on the main events or one on one matches on the show. 1995 had a really hot opener too, with The BodyDonnas vs The Underdogs. 1992 basically pissed on the Survivor Series concept. The only elimination match went by the old "if a guy is eliminated, the partner goes too" stipulation. That was fine in the early days when they would have 10 tag teams in a match but with only 2 teams to a match, it was pointless. I love how the early Survivor Series shows were never really feud-enders. They just continued feuds and with the Rumble as the next PPV which was another PPV that rarely ended feuds, we normally got some blow-off matches at Wrestlemania. I also liked how they brought together teams of people who had nothing in common and they would fight teams made up of who each wrestler was feuding with at the time. There were also little things like on Superstars and the like in the weeks leading up to the PPV, when a Team Member was fighting a match, he would have his team mates at ring side with him. Unfortunately now, Survivor Series is just another monthly PPV. The WWE have recognised this and are making certain matches relevant to each PPV. Hopefully, this years Survivor Series actually builds elimination matches up correctly because the elimination series gimmick is my favourite gimmick match. And then maybe we won't be in the situation of what happened last year/earlier this year when there were rumours that Survivor Series was going to be scrapped.

Watching any late 80s or early 90s Survivor Series makes me a sad panda. I used to absolutely, positively love everything about them (especially Vince's over-the-top intro video.) I'd say 1989 was my favourite one growing up.

I'm going through the anthology right now and am up to 1996 I think. This was indeed a very good card.

I thought it had been scrapped along with most of the other old PPV names in place of gimmick PPVs and names. Apparently they noticed that UFC PPV buys might have affected it, like they did with Wrestlemania, so it's got a reprieve. I personally think they couldn't come up with anything else to replace it with.

I wish Survivor Series was still like this

Feels weird to see how Undertaker started in the company as strong as he did.

Survivor Series was SPECIAL. Winning the matches was IMPORTANT to the teams.
Now....who cares?

I always thought they should move Elimination Chamber to December and they could have a 5 on 5 wild card match, with the winning team being the chamber with the champion the next month. Or what I would have like to see is a Smackdown vs. Raw Ultimate Survivor Match. (the earier matches would be Raw vs. Raw, Smackdown vs. Smackdown) Which could help tease and book whats gonna happen at Wrestlemania. Take this years... have Taker and HBK having a showdown during the match, or Batista tease a heel turn holding the tights while pinning John Cena.
