Family Video does real well around here, it was like they sprung up all over town overnight. They also have a new policy that once a movie has been out for 30 days, it becomes a 1 dollar for 5 nights rental. Its 2 dollars for 5 nights for Blu Ray.

I think it was posted a couple of weeks ago. Too bad it's only in america though. as someone who works at Blockbuster in Canada, I hope that one day your job that pays your bills ends up in doubt and you have to listen to some idiot harp about how they think it's funny you might lose your job. I know this doesn't affect my job personally, but wishing that a company that employs tons of people and never hurt anybody goes out of business is just cold. Best to start looking for other work. Blockbuster in Canada won't be long for this world either, you know

Is it mean that I enjoy this? If it is, then welcome to the mean club because I enjoy it as well. I can't stand them. I do feel bad for anyone who will lose their job though. That part I don't like at all.

If you work(ed) at Blockbuster (or Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery) and didn't see this coming a LONG time ago, you frankly just wern't paying much attention or decided to take your chances.

Family Video is fantastic - much better prices, an ACTUAL CLASSIC MOVIE SECTION, and free kids movies! I remember their videogame rental prices being a bit steep though. Also, when I signed up, it took them a whole year to cancel the new members price for me.

I already knew this could happen long before it started being public. I wasn't "taking my chances", I had difficulty finding other work and had to stick with what I had. it's not like I could just get up and walk away of my own volition. I mean... I COULD do that, but then I'd have no money and bills to pay.

Feel bad for those that are losing their jobs. However, I seen this coming from a mile away. It is Blockbuster's own fault. Once Redbox started to pick up, they should have lowered the prices. Instead, the ones around here rose their prices. The one just a few minutes from me closed recently and was replaced by California Video, which has been doing fantastic! They only cost $2.50 for a new release two day rental, which is great if Redbox and Netflix are out. You only have to pay an extra $1.50. That's reasonable.
If Blockbuster would have followed the same pattern and shifted to new demands, they may have done better. Of course, I'm no business major. This is simple speculation on my part.

It's kind of sad as I remember being a kid looking at all of the movies and not being able to pick one and sometimes being allowed to get 2. Good times.

I do not like the Blockbuster Video. They do not carry the type of films a refined gentleman like myself prefers, only 500 copies of the latest film starring a grotesque bloated gringo who makes fart sounds and burro faces. All true gentlemen such as myself have abandoned Blockbuster for Netflix.

Why is it that people think employees of companies (or in industries) that are doing poorly just aren't paying attention to what's going on and are randomly blindsided when things go south? I never understood that.

It just sucks that the only people who really get screwed by this are the employees, and not the executives that have been steering this ship into Iceberg Alley for the last 10 years.
