Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5 will be up in about a week. It will be the last in the series, and will cover Castlevania's story time line. Let's turn this into a discussion about Castlevania, imo, one of the best video game series ever.

I've never played any of these games but always hear they are good. My computers f***ing up so I can't get the links to load, but is it a series where one ties in with another in terms of story, or are they all independent of each other?

I find it funny that the best 3D Castlevania game wasn't even supposed to be a Castlevania game.
Also, I'm not saying the series SHOULDN'T be it 3D, but the series is at its best in 2D. And I can't wait for Episode 4, gonna cover the handheld games, some of the best games in the series, easily.
I have to say, next to the Pokemon RPGs, the Castlevania series is the series that works best on handhelds.

It's about a famous family of vampire hunters called the Belmonts, who go through Dracula's castle and fight different monsters until they face the man himself. Each (but not ALL) game's main character is an ancestor or descendant of the other.

Each (but not ALL) game's main character is an ancestor or descendant of the other. Some of the times they are a descendant of Dracula, in the case of Alucard. Though, aside from the characters, most of the games don't connect, and it wasn't until the late 90s that the games had a TRUE story.

I've played Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV, and SOTN.
I think SOTN is one of the top 10 games ever made.

I've played Simon's Quest and Castlevania 3 never have I played the first one or any other of the series. Simon's Quest has always been my favorite despite the annoying pop up block thing that comes up every time it gets night or morning.

I love the Castlevania series. My favorites of the older, stage-clear style are Castlevania III and Rondo of Blood, the former due to its immaculate design and multiple-character aesthetic and the latter due to its numerous hidden pathways that branch out to alternate levels. (Rondo of Blood loses some points though due to Maria being so broken.)
Of the newer Metroidvania games my favorites are Symphony of the Night (the first, and still a classic), Aria of Sorrow (the soul system is ingenious and very well-executed), and Order of Ecclesia (love the game's challenge, and the overall game design is top-notch).

You know it wasn't till this retrospective that I noticed that damn near all of the Castlevania games post-SotN have had a 3 part subtitle. It is always (blank) of (blank). Weird.

Actually, yeah; the only exceptions are the three worst of the post-SotN games, Castlevania 64, Castlevania Legends and Castlevania Judgment. (The Adventure ReBirth and Dracula X Chronicles I consider exempt since they're remakes)

I never played Castlevania until Dawn of Sorrows, which was pretty awesome.
I downloaded Symphony of the Night on XBLA and compared to DoS, it's REALLY outdated. I have so many useless items I can't get rid of and the game is cryptic on nearly everything you're supposed to do. It's a good game, but DoS was better.
And I played a bit of Judgment. Awful!

Watching this reminds just how badass the music of Castlevania has been.

I'd like to know if James has played Lament of Innocence, and if so, what he thinks about it. THAT is 3D Castlevania finally done right, imo. It had the familiar whip-cracking atmosphere, but finally got it to fit well in a 3D setting. A truly underrated part of the series.

I would've liked Lament of Innocence a lot more if the level design wasn't so damn repetitive. Same goes for Curse of Darkness. Both are pretty decent games, but they could've been so much more.
Huge fan of the series, both old and new school. Except for some of the old Game Boy Games, 64 (though Legacy of Darkness is MUCH better), Judgment, and Harmony of Copypa--I mean, Despair, I like about every game in the series. And I'm still not tired of the Metroidvania format despite how stale it's apparently become if you ask the Internet. Haven't played Lords of Shadow yet, but I really want to.
SotN is also one of my favorite games of all time.

Heh, I like how some opinions on certain games are different depending on which one is played first. I've first played the first Castlevania once when I was little, and it was fun (and hard) but pretty spooky. But I never played any of the other ones or got into the series until SOTN. SOTN was the one I first truly embraced and loved, and then I started going out of my way to play the other ones. Watching this reminds just how badass the music of Castlevania has been. Hands down one of the BEST video game soundtrack collections ever. I loved SOTN's rendition of "Bloody Tears", as a matter of fact SOTN entire soundtrack is amazing from beginning to end (I HIGHLY recommend youtubing them for those unfamiliar), but my favorite will always be the original from Simon's Quest.
