I'm considering picking this DVD up after work.
But I'd also like some confirmation on how good it is. Admittedly I'm not familiar with the plot, but I've heard rumblings around.
So what do the resident BatFans say? How does it compare to some other Batman animated flicks like Mask of Phantasm and Sub-Zero?

Definitely on par with SubZero; not near the level of Phantasm ( but then that was the best Batflim PERIOD before the Nolan flicks and still gives 'em a run for their money.)
I liked it quite a bit, though it mighta helped that I was really familiar with the storyline it was based on and the history of the Jason Todd character. Even without that though it's definitely a fun watch.

That's promising.
I hold both S-Z and MotP pretty much at the same level.

I put it 3rd on favorite Batman animated films. 1st being Phantasm and 2nd being Return of the Joker.

I thought it was great. I sat down to watch it not aware at all of the plotline, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it is a loose adaptation of the 'Death in the Family' storyline, which was one of the first comics I ever owned. I highly recommend it.

Well, if you've seen the extended promo for it o the previous dvd (I forget which one, maybe Superman/Batman Public Enemies?) they made a lot about it being "darker" than previous animated features. I think the word "edgy" was also used...
It wasn't really. It was about as dark and edgy as any animated Batman done in the past with that Bruce Timm sensibility. The stuff with Nightwing, voiced by Neil Patrick Harris as a nice selling point, is fun.
The film takes for granted that you know the history of Robins, at least up to the second one, so if you don't maybe wiki or you could be lost.
I didn't really like the interpretation of the Joker, either visually or vocally.
I guess my ultimate recommendation would be to get it, but unless you're getting a 2-disc with special features: don't spend more than average price for a 4-month old dvd, which shouldn't be more than $14.99, and should really be $10 or $12 (sorry, I dunno bluray prices.
Another suggestion: you could probably check-out this thing from your library for free, and I saw it in a RedBox a month or so ago, or y'know that stuff that rhymes "mitborrent"... It just doesn't seem like a good idea to me to buy a movie that old, and one that has been simply lauded as "the eighth in a line of direct-to-dvd animated features" for anything approaching full-price.
I watched it drunk with friends (fine... approximately one friend), and maybe MST3K'ing to lamer parts made a difference... Either way, don't go into it believing it's an awesome movie and then watch it alone and/or sober, or you might be disappointed.
(also I should mention that I haven't read the comic, so if you have, you would likely enjoy it more)

It's great. Dimaggio REALLY surprised me as The Joker. And, it's got NPH as Nightwing.

Get it. It's freakin' GREAT.
I thought DiMaggio's Joker was one of the best Joker's I've seen in a long time. A great mixture of hilariously demented and just downright f***ing psychotic.
Plus it has Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing, which he rocked.

It's the truest representation of Batman ever seen in a movie, animated or otherwise. I really love it.

It's awesome, took a second to get over Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill not voicing Batman and Joker, but overall, a very, very good movie. Watched it on Netflix Instant also.

Add me to the list of people who saw this through Netflix. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Didn't really dig the guy who voiced Joker, but that didn't take anything away from how awesome this was.

IMO, it's not the best DC Animated movie they've put out, but it's not bad either and definately worth a look.

The only thing I'd say is really missing from the movie is Tim Drake. I understand that he was likely cut due to the simple fact that they only had 1 hour and 15 minutes to work with, but I still feel that having Jason's "replacement" in the film would have made it that much more poignant.
