Who plays them? Which ones? Who hates them and doesn't see the point? Who realises they're an increasingly cynical method of extracting regular lumps of money through psychological manipulation and still don't care? Who has a custom keyboard for them? Who uses a USB controller because they refuse to leave the console nest?
I'm just starting to get into one myself after a long haitus but I'm stuck on the most totally important thing... naming my dude. Hey, I'll have to carry that name around for a long time if I keep playing. So, yeah. It's so Mental Disordery of me, but there you go.
But don't let my lack of progress stop you. How about those MMOs?

Hey, I'll have to carry that name around for a long time if I keep playing. So, yeah. It's so Mental Disordery of me, but there you go. But don't let my lack of progress stop you. How about those MMOs? We have several members here (including myself) who play WoW. Not sure if anyone else here plays other MMO's, but I can recount my own past experiences. I started with Final Fantasy XI. I enjoyed the game, but looking back it was a major pain in the butt. The style of camping in one spot and kiting enemies to the group just doesn't make sense to me. I got as high as becoming a paladin, but the class armor quests drove me nuts so I left. Next came City of Heroes. Now that I really enjoyed. The character customization is still one of the best in MMOs. Plus while it was fairly "grindy" The different missions helped alleviate that feeling. Next was Guild Wars, which was different in that the level cap was 20 and the third expansion you could have npc as party members. Fun, but like the others just got bored after a while. Then came WoW. I still remember my first character, Dwarf Hunter, and being blown away by the snow covered areas. I've quit and came back several times (CoH, Champions Online) but wow always draws me back. Right now, I'm in the beta of another as not yet released MMO, but WoW is where my heart is. The only thing I can see stopping my sub to WoW is school and The Old Republic.

I played Guild Wars for a while, and liked it quite a bit since grinding was minimal and I could play more alone than other MMO's. I'm looking some at The Old Republic, but I don't know if I'll have time to play it for a while.

Not my type of game. Seems like a whole lot of repetition for nothing....also, paying for a game I bought already just so I can play it? No thanks.

My personal choice since november of 09 and it has been epic.
6 classes each with 4 sublclasses to choose from...and even more on the way with the thief etc.
For a 2d Arcade MMORPG it has so much depth to it's surprisingly confusing for new comers.

I can't do MMOs.
On one hand, I love character building. On the other, I hate the feeling of futility I get from playing a game that was never designed to end.
Being level 812 and finally learning Super Killdeath Fire just isn't enough for me.

Lord of the Rings Online is pretty good, and a lot of it is free to play.

I played Final Fantasy XI for a year. I want that year of my life back. Still, I'm really excited for The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 looks pretty sweet, too.
Still haven't tried out WoW, despite my friends' efforts.

I play Dungeons and Dragons Online. It was my first MMORPG, and I started back in July after an old pen and paper group member suggested it. Fell in love instantly. Went free to play to premium to pay to play in about a week because of some messed up idea about supporting products I enjoy.
I was also glad it helped me kick my Magic the Gathering Online habit.

I've played City of Heroes...which was pretty good, but I got really tired of how long it took to get all the good stuff (like capes and flying and such).
I've played WoW, and did like it at first, until I started to realize...as mean spirited as people are on the internet, they are 30 times worse on WoW and many other MMORPGs. Couldn't stand how, just because I don't like fighting other players, I could NEVER have as good of gear as PvPers do. If I wanted to brainlessly fight, harass, and kill other people, I'd just play Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter.
Played Star Wars Galaxies and couldn't stand it. People seemed nicer there than on WoW, but it was much harder to learn and play. Not a pretty looking game either, compared to WoW.
D&D Online wasn't bad, but it took FOREVER to gain any levels...contrary to the pen and pencil game it is based on. People seemed nice, but like Galaxies, it was much harder for me to learn than WoW was. Dropped out and haven't played again for a very long time.
Am actually interested in The Old Republic, although I hold a grudge against it (would rather have KotR 3 than this). Might give it a chance if I can do so for free as a demo or something.
Overall, I can't stand the attitudes of people on MMOs (yes, WoW really REALLY soured me) and prefer single player games with DLC or definate endings.

Overall, I can't stand the attitudes of people on MMOs (yes, WoW really REALLY soured me) and prefer single player games with DLC or definate endings. As far as WoW goes, PVP gear kinda tricks the uninitiated into thinking it has the best stats in the game. But, if you're going into a raid with top tier PVP gear, chances are you'll be kicked out, as the gear works well against other players but not against CPU enemies in a raid setting. Also, realize that PVP sets and Arena sets are two different things. Battleground-only PVP sets are similar to the "mindless killing" you're talking about (even though each BG has its own set of goals), but arena gear takes a LOT of skill, planning, patience, experimentation, and all that.... it's one reason why I don't play arenas because I lack that kind of thought-process to get into that. But I will agree, the vocal minority in WoW can really turn people off to the game and MMOs in general. They're even worse than the Halo community, which is a feat in-and-of itself. However, there ARE a lot of great guilds who stay away from general chat, who genuinely want to help others enjoy the game and enjoy each others company while playing the game. The guild I have been in for the past year and a half does a great job progressing through content, but we're mainly in it to spend time with each other even though we're in all different parts of the country, and just hang out.

I play WoW and Champions Online really sporadically...
I've run the gamut of mmo's though... they are the two that I still play at all... granted Champions only because my friend got me the Lifetime Subscription when it first came out as a gift... otherwise I would have dropped it pretty quick...
Other MMo's I've played off the top of my head
City of Heroes/Villains Asheron's Call Star Wars Galaxies Earth and Beyond Final Fantasy 11 Matrix Online Dungeons and Dragons online

I want to play MMORPGs.
But I have to prevent myself from it.
Because I know I'll become one of those guys who sits in his mom's basement playing WoW for 60 hours a week.
