Cena's problem isn't that he's bad at selling (he's pretty good at it) so much as unless a segment is booked to have him lying outright unconscious the guy tends to forget his injuries and be acting like he's a-okay sometimes even in the middle of a match. See Michaels getting pissed at him over it at WrestleMania 23. That would mean he's bad at selling wouldn't it? If being good at selling means just being able to look like you're hurt sometimes, when you feel like it, or when you remember, I'm pretty sure on my first try I could be a grandmaster seller.

Maybe in return Cena can teach him how to sell a feud And cut an interesting promo instead of being less charismatic than Ted Jr like how Orton always is when he cuts a promo. Seriously the guy shouldn't speak. He is way more interesting as the silent crazy killer type.

Ortons the best new youngin' WWE's got. If not as a whole, then definitely as in-ring performers. Hell, lots of respectable wrestlers have come out and said he's this generations HBK. His style is just..completely different. It's a slower pace. And not a lot of people like that. I'm fine with it.
But yeah, he sold it like a champ, even at the end, he skids across it to make the pin, but the whole time he's pinning his face looks like it's in constant anguish. To his credit, he stays in character even in small things like that.

Hell, I think he's probably one of the worst young guns they have. It's not the fact that he's slow and deliberate that's the problem...it's that he can't make his slow and deliberate style remotely interesting to watch. His matches feel completely soulless, which is the worst sin you can commit in wrestling. To me, he does two things well: physical presence (seriously, when he walks to the ring, you just get the feeling that something big is going down) and selling (which I touched on earlier.) But to suggest he's this generation's HBK is laughable IMO.

Also agree on Orton having great presence. However in matches, seems more like he's being slow just to suit the character, rather than the match, which is no fun. Yeah I get it, the viper and all that, doesn't mean watching the next 50 main events in slow motion makes it entertaining. It's at least a bit better since he's a face now, since he'll play face in peril and thus not subject us to his offense as much. As a heel it was getting pretty brutal and unwatchable when he'd be in control for a long stretch....to me anyway.

Considering that Orton has been just as bad as Cena in the past when it comes to selling beatdowns, he was the last name I was expecting in this thread.

I agree that Orton's strongest point is his selling. His matches, like Cena's, follow a rigid pattern though which frustrates me.
I don't wanna have to watch "clotheslines, scoop slam, rope DDT, pound the floor, RKO!" every week, much like I didn't enjoy "shoulderblocks, Protobomb, 5 Knuckle Shuffle, AA, STF!" every week either.

Seriously the guy shouldn't speak. He is way more interesting as the silent crazy killer type. Seriously, the guy was champ in 2007 and had next to no heat. Only after he started feuding with the Hardy Brothers did he come into his own as a main eventer. "because I kicked HIM where his APPENDIX...USED TO BE!"

Actually, Cena should learn how to sell from David Otunga...
because Otunga was the best at selling programs on NXT, and Cena needs a new line of work anyway....

Unfortunately, that's what WWE main eventers do. It's always going to be the same exact pattern. I get the feeling that management thinks that means the live crowd will be able to anticipate what's coming next, and start to react for it before and while it's happening, instead of after. It may work for the live crowds, but it doesn't translate well to TV.

Cena could even learn one or two things about selling from Rob Terry. Yes, I said it. Rob Terry sells much better than John Cena. Rob Terry cannot wrestle, but he can sell an injury.

He's booked to be a superman, if he was booked differently he would sell differently.

John Cena (and a lot of other wrestlers) could learn a thing or two about selling from John Cena Sr. Remember how well he sold the beaten he got from Orton a couple of years ago?

Yeah, say what you will about Orton, call him dull, etc. but I thought he did a great job selling and storytelling in that match. It's all in the little things. Even when he managed to hit an offensive move, he would immediately collapse in pain. Oh, and the look on his face when the "AWESOMMMMME!" hit....that was priceless, too. Facial expressions are a form of selling, too, and his said "I'm screwed". I say good job to all participants in the last half hour or so of Raw.
