As Mick Foley once said "Spit Washes off" . This loser needed to drag you down to his level in order to make you smaller in the eyes of his friends who now have less respect for him.
Sometimes the smartest thing to do is the thing that is the hardest to accomplise.
You did well man in maintaining not only your dignity but also the respect of your girl and friends.
You were a real man and I am proud of you. I know it wasn't easy.

If I were you I would give the mutual friends an ultimatum-- either shun this jerk from the Circle of Friends or kiss Threadkiller and Gloria goodbye forever. Until the druggie/sexually-abusive/disrespectful ass-clown gets down on his damned hands and knees, apologizes profusely to both you AND Gloria, and realizes what a dillweed he's been to everyone involved he doesn't deserve positive social interaction with mature adults.
Edit: Oh, and I'm also an English major! We get all the ladies in the end... I may mean that more ways than one ;D

To me spitting is not nearly as low as going behind someone's back, and it was probably the best way the guy could think of to get you to fight.

I really gotta give it to you, your self control in that situation seems outstanding. Better than a fair few people here (me included).
I think you did the right thing. If you did get into the fight with him, what would you have in the end? Self-satisfaction (which isn't even guaranteed - you might end up regretting it, just like you're regretting not kicking this guy's ass), but the loss of respect from your peers and your girlfriend, as well as potential trouble with the cops. I honestly think you walked out of the situation the better man, easily. This other guy obviously came off as the douchebag he his by spitting on your face, twice. You have his girl. You have respect from your peers and others on this board. If you did kick his ass, the situation would have been very different.

I want to thank every last one of you for your contributions, whether you agreed with me or not.
Just reading your posts has calmed me down to the point where I'm not shaking with violent anger and the sense that maybe I didn't do the right thing and SHOULD have beaten him up.
This has been a spectacular Holiday, and that was the only negative occasion the entire weekend.
Again, I want to thank you all. Ya'll are why this is the only forum on the internet I ever really want to be part of.

You should have Kevin Steen'd him and kissed him with a sick grin on your face. Would have completely thrown him off of everything he was thinking, giving him the impression you're out of your mind and he, in turn, doesn't want to mess with you.
Or maybe that's just my psychotic mind at work.

You did the right thing. Sometimes doing the right thing is the hardest thing to do. I can imagine your anger (I've been spit on and it's one of the most insulting things that can happen to a person) but you rose above it and came out the winner in the long run. I know it may be cold comfort, but really - it showed what a colossal ass he is to all your pals. You won by walking away. It may not feel like it, but you did. You got the girl, you got the right to say you stood by your word..so you're the winner here.
Just one thing: for the love of God, if this guy ever comes into your life again - do NOT let him back in. Ever. He's bad news and a total idiot and waste of your time.
