When they cease to be as hot as they once were, they continue to write, and give their songs to younger artists. Of course they get royalties, but I guess they'd rather their song be heard, rather than ignored, because said artist isn't as big as they once were.
I'm not sure if this happens in rock as much, not a bad idea though.

This has to do with money. The record companies believe that the older stars aren't as hot anymore so that means they won't sell so they get pushed to the background while new younger less-talented stars get pushed to the front of the line. Older stars disappear from the radio and we get bombared with crap.
Some stars fade away and some just want to take it easy and I have no problem with that. What bothers me is they are often forced off the air to make room for people who don't even have a quarter of the talent.
Johnny Cash got really pissed about this and I don't blame him.
