Okay here's the deal. My 11 year old sister got a Nintendo DSi for Christmas last year. It suddenly went missing sometime in April, but we still have the charger.
My parents adamantly believe that her 9 year old cousin did something with it. The girl has a history of hiding my sisters stuff and in some cases straight up taking it. A couple of examples of this would be when we found a pair of my sister's old glasses at her house, or when the 9 year old hid her new shoes from her because they were arguing.
Around the same time period that the DSi went missing, somebody had logged into my sister's facebook and posted "I'm such a whore.". We KNOW she didn't do it, 100% without a doubt. The spelling and punctuation was perfect, and it was also posted from a Motorola phone. This lead us all to believe that our other cousin (the 9 year old's 20 year old sister) was responsible. It sounds silly, but she is a BITCH. She has a history of lying, stealing, and also can be downright vindictive. She also loves her little sister to death.
Anyway, yesterday during Christmas dinner at our house, the 20 year old asked my mom if she still had my sister's DSi charger. She said that her ex boyfriend had given her a DSi but didn't include the charger. Later she changed her story and said he left it at her house by accident. The kicker is that she broke up with this guy a really long time ago, so for her to have something of his it means she's had it for a really long time and is just now asking us for a charger. The DSi is the same color as my sister's, but it's white (the default color) so that doesn't help much. We don't have the original box or receipt either.
Basically, I'm looking for ideas on how to identify this thing. We haven't given her the charger yet. I've thought of checking the pictures/sounds/animations to see if my sister's stuff is still there (though she easily could have deleted the memory, her sister has her own DSi so she'd have access to a charger). The only other thing I can think of is somehow identifying our charger as being specific to that DSi. Perhaps a serial number that is on both the charger and DSi. Any ideas??

Unfortunately I can't really think of anything. I don't think the charger and DSi have the same serial numbers or anything, but I'll check my fiancee's and get back to you in a minute or two.
She sounds like a huge bitch, by the way.

So I'm assuming that there are no great detectives on the board EDIT: What are the odds that I would post at the exact same time as the first reply? Wow... Thanks dude! That is unfortunately our most possible solution other than actually inspecting the contents of the system and being lucky enough to find something.

Yeahhh, there's no corresponding identification between the charger and the DSi itself, so unless there were parental controls that only someone in your family would know the password to, the only real shot you have is maybe being lucky enough that she didn't totally erase all the data.
Sorry, man. This is a really shitty situation. =/

Thanks anyway dude, I'm going to get my hands on it tonight hopefully so maybe I'll find out something. If it's my sister's, I'm going to beat her with it. The 20 year old, not my sister...

Don't assume that there aren't any great detectives. Instead assume that what you're looking for is nigh impossible.

I'm of no use here, as I'd suggest beating people with a burlap sack filled with doorknobs to get to the truth ...

Don't assume that there aren't any great detectives. Instead assume that what you're looking for is nigh impossible. Yea I know. I consider myself to be pretty good at stuff like this, but this is one crafty bitch. Or it's possible that we're barking up the wrong tree. There's got to be a way to get the truth out of her. I even considered bluffing her ("Oh check this out, the charger and the DS have the same serial number!") or conning her ("I wish I knew who stole that little brat's DS, whoever did it deserves a cookie"). These are all things that will make me look stupid if they go wrong though lol.

sorry but without the original box there's no way to prove its your sisters dsi, and it's a machine which is easily formatted.
unless there are any identifying cracks/dents/scratches on the actual casing i'm going to sadly say it's probably gone. and dont let anyone from that side of your family back in your house unsupervised.

Yeah, as crappy as this sounds you may want to just chalk this up as a learning experience.
Always keep your boxes. If you have any false ceilings in your house, they're the perfect place to keep them out of the way.

Did your sister register her DSi on Nintendo's Club Nintendo site? If she did, you'd be able to look at it's serial number, as that's what you input when you register a Nintendo platform, and then you could check its number with that of the one the cousin has. If not, sad to say, you are pretty much shit out of luck.

Ok, I did the most genius thing ever. I contacted her ex boyfriend that she said gave her the ds/left it at her house. He said "no, I've never owned a DS sorry". So we went to her house and told her mom. We got the DSi back.
Sadly, I'm thinking that it was formatted. When I went to look through the pictures, it started the tutorial explaining how to use the camera etc. On one hand, this could mean that she simply never used the camera, but I find that highly unlikely because she has clearly had the thing for a long time and is also a girl that takes pictures of herself all the damn time. She didn't admit to stealing it, but it seems like she gave it up pretty easily. I'm 99% certain that we've resolved the issue but I wish I could find that extra 1% proof so the case could be closed.
You're damn right I feel like Dick Tracy right now.

Sweet, now cut off all communications with that side of the family, or at least that specific sect of the family.

Nice work! Though I am a little disappointed you didn't hit her over the head with it.
For stealing from an ELEVEN year old girl, and calling her a whore... it's the least she deserves. :\

1. I don't know what a DSi is. 2. I'm glad you got it back. 3. The two girls (not your sister) sound like lousy people. 4. Isn't 11 way too young to have a Facebook account?

For stealing from an ELEVEN year old girl, and calling her a whore... it's the least she deserves. :\ What we THINK happened, is that the 9 year old stole it and then her 20 year old sister helped her hide it or something. Simply b/c the 9 year old is here fairly often while the 20 year old only shows up on special occasions. My aunt has 3 kids, and it's looks like they just get worse and worse. My older male cousin seems to lie a lot but is generally good hearted. His younger sister lies a lot and has been that way since she was a small child. Her younger sister lies just as much but is also kind of violent and spoiled rotten. As far as I'm concerned, neither of them should be welcome here again.
