Since there are a lot of people here with different taste in music, does anybody know of bands that don't follow normal 4:4 or similar time or the traditional Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Chorus structure? Nothing wrong with them, but I want some different sounding stuff. One I know that doesn't follow regular time is Dream Theater, but that's all I know of

at least 2 3rds of the bands I listen to. Opeth, Agalloch, Neurosis, Tool, Isis, Mastodon, Cathedral, every Grindcore band under the sun, Between the Buried and Me, and Neuraxis, just to name a few. Extreme Metal doesn;'t really lend itself well to linear song structure.

Not only do the Melvins not follow normal song structure, some of their songs don't even have real lyrics.

Pretty much all of Mike Patton's bands. He himself admits he doesn't know how to structure a song.
The Project Hate. Their usual 8 minute long songs go all over the place.

Dave Brubeck was pretty much the innovator of odd time signatures

Well, I'd say SOAD isn't a very conventional band, and there are quite a lot of Black Sabbath songs that don't follow the traditional VCV structure with lyrics.

Pretty much every post-rock (and affiliated band): Explosions in the Sky, Red Sparowes, Russian Circles, This Will Destroy You, etc.
Also, last I remember, my beloved Bear Vs. Shark weren't into typical song structures.

Learn something new every day... I've heard he is that way. But he does have some songs from FNM that would fit the more classical structure. However, I think it's more accurate to say that Patton isn't as confident with that way of writing songs.

In Faith No More he's working with other people, so the structure fits more of a regular format. In a band like Fantomas, he writes all these rhythms he likes and he thinks "eventually these must go together in some sequence in order to be a song".(at least that's what I get from his interviews) Organized chaos in a way.

Wow, outside of Faith No More, The Melvins, Opeth, Mastodon and Mindless Self Indulgence I have no idea who any of these bands are. A diverse music community is great, I've been introduced to a hell of a lot of bands in this thread alone

I know I pimp them all the time, but Coheed & Cambria have tons of songs that don't follow ordinary structure. Their newest album does for the most part, but beyond that, their albums have tons of songs that use different structures.
The Mars Volta is another if you don't already listen to them.
Owen Pallett isn't really along the lines of most of the stuff mentioned in this thread, but his songs very rarely follow normal structure. Also he's awesome. You'll find his old stuff under his Final Fantasy name.
The Appleseed Cast has been known to play with song structures, too.
If you want more recs, I'll keep 'em coming. Also, to everyone in this thread who mentioned Bear vs. Shark: I love you.
