Well, it is still over five months until I plan on moving, but figured I'd get a head start rather than wait until the end. Basically, I want to stay in the Northeast, preferably in New York or Pennsylvania. Ideally I would like to stay somewhere near New York City.
However, there is a catch. I really want to live some place where I have a much more comfortable quality of life. What am looking for would be:
*A place where the rent is about $500 a month.
*A place that I rent directly from a housing office. No sublets or anything like that.
*A one bedroom or studio apartment that is just for me. No roommates.
*My own kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. Tiny is OK as long as they are there.
*A place to park.
If Crappers can point me in the right direction that would be really helpful. Basically I am looking for apartment complexes that I can scope out.
Right now I am thinking Ithaca, New York. Nowhere near New York City, but I have been ambitiously thinking about completing my last leg of college at Cornell University. The rent seems at the range I'm looking for. but the Cornell things a long shot and I would prefer to stay somewhere closer to NYC. Still, comparatively everywhere I look around NYC or Philadelphia that meets my other requirements are like three times that amount and there is no way I am paying that.
Thanks for any advice you can give Crappers!

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't rule out NJ. If you or anyone else have further information about living in NJ that could be helpful as well.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't rule out NJ. If you or anyone else have further information about living in NJ that could be helpful as well. Hoboken,NJ is about a 10-15 minute drive to NYC or a 5 minute one if you want to use the train or bus system. It pretty much has everything you're looking for that you mentioned.Plus it's a good shopping town with a store for just about anything you need & good places to eat.Not to mention the park by the river has a great view of NYC & is a great place to just walk around & relax. All that being said it is a place that is connected to NYC vis transit & people communiting back & forth to work so I'm not really sure of the current rent prices. I was born & raised there but haven't been there since about 2003.

I haven't checked out Hoboken yet though. Thanks for the tip!

You should consider Long Island- more specifically Nassau county. I am from Queens originally, moved out to Long Island 8 years ago. Nassau is good because, its very close to NYC- parking situation is much much better, I park in front of my house, and don't have to drive around the block 4 times, paralell park, risk a ticket for street cleaning. I have easy access to NYC, yet don't have to deal with all the issues that come with living there. $500-$600 should be enough for a studio

Yeah, Long Island or Jersey seems like a good bet. You can get surprisingly close to NYC for that kind of rent for a studio. If you're bulletproof, maybe Newark?
