he loved them because he actually stuck around. i think there was a time where he had a chance to move out but he came back (when any sane person would have just stayed away.)

Despite what he would say, Al loved his family. I think he was just bothered by how he arrived at where he was.

He actually proved it many times over during the course of the show. I Don't think the show would have been nearly as good if he didn't.

He criticized them but came to their defense, would he have done the same for Marcy?

The entire 1st season almost seems like Bizzaro world compared to the rest of the series. At the end of every episode, Peg and Al always had a sweet, loving moment.

He criticized them but came to their defense The Bundy clan did this quite a bit. Yes, they nitpicked each other, but it anyone else OUTSIDE the family did it, then watch out, because they'd get you.

The weird part was those episodes were considered edgy. With how far they went with the cartoonyness its like two different series at certain points. I never thought it was bad at any point but still it could have worn thin.

That scene made me tear up the first time I saw it. God's honest truth.

That was part of the show's charm. Al Bundy loved his family, even if he barely showed it.
NOBODY messes with a Bundy.

Al loved his family, he just didn't always show it towards them, but god forbid someone mess with a Bundy, he would have nothing of the sort.

Its already been said several times but I agree, a major part of the charm of this show was the fact that any Bundy would mock the hell out of the others but if anyone else hurt one of them, it was go time.
And I always loved it when Al and Bud would throw down and beat up like 10 people.

That's how my family is, we talk crap about each other but no one else can. That's why I love this show.

He threatened to send the kids away and then started in on saying things about Peggy. This causes Bud to kick his ass and toss him out,

The entire 1st season almost seems like Bizzaro world compared to the rest of the series. At the end of every episode, Peg and Al always had a sweet, loving moment. I think that's what made this particular scene more effective. The first season loving moments seem so fake and just like every other sitcom. In this you see it out of no where and it makes sense at the same time.
