JAWS has to be mentioned at some point. Not that Benchley's novel isn't a great summer beach read, but what Speilberg and the script crew did improved upon it by about a thousand. In particular, the ending, and the omission of Ellen Brody's wet dream about/affair with Matt Hooper. Jaws was my first example in the thread. I am glad we are like minded. I don't know anyone else who has read this book to even discuss. Another one that COULD be argued is The Deep. Benchley was a great writer, especially of the "summer reading" variety, but his books tend to get bogged down with unnecessary and trivial details that don't do a whole lot to move the plot along. But holy crap, he's got nothing on Stieg Larsson in that department. God bless him, Larsson is just about OCD with details, details, details in his "Girl Who" series. The movies made out of those books have been a LOT better than the books in my opinion, just because they DO omit a lot of the tedious, almost list-like description that Larsson used in the books. And I say that as a huge fan of the books. ;D
