Two people took him down, according to the sheriff. My heart goes out to all those killed in this senseless tragedy, and my thoughts are with Rep. Giffords as she (hopefully) lives through this. Those two people are goddamned heroes, then. The shooter sounds genuinely crazy. Extreme nature of this country's political discourse aside, I'd have to think this is something he would've done with or without rhetoric egging him on. For these kinds of people, it's only a matter of when, rather than if, before they snap. I'm just glad they got him before he could take the easy way out and shoot himself. I completely agree with this. KPNX in Phoenix is reporting that U.S. District Judge John Roll, one of those killed, was not a scheduled guest at Giffords' event. He was just dropping by to say hi to her. That makes it even more tragic to me, for some reason.

The good thing is Giffords was speaking and somewhat responsive when she arrived at the hospital. One doctor on Fox News says that is an extremely good sign considering she was shot in the head. That's good news to hear.

If there was a political motivation for the shooting (they're still not saying for sure yet), he very easily could have done it without one, from the way he's being described.

Turns out he's not the toughest person in his house. All kidding aside, I hope he and all the families affected by the shooting are holding up well.

Horrible to hear. Hopefully Ms. Giffords pulls through. Let's keep the victims and their families in our thoughts.

Obviously not on active duty if she was a congresswoman, but I thought I heard she served, too.

Obviously not on active duty if she was a congresswoman, but I thought I heard she served, too. She didn't serve, but she is a part of the Armed Services commitee. So she and other reps are responsible for funding and oversight of the military and Department of Defense. More info on one of the victims (from KVOA): 9-year-old Christina Taylor Greene loved the political process and was even part of her student government (didn't know they had student council at that age). Her birth date: September 11, 2001.

Good to here about Rep. Giffords.
Kids dying/being killed just isn't right. She didn't have a full life, neither should the killer. That probably breaks a rule, so delete if need be.

Some small updates:
Gifford was briefly brought out of a medically induced coma and did respond to her husband before she was put back under. Doctors remain optimistic about her recovery chances.
The US House of Representatives has suspended all action on the floor for next week out of respect.
We have identification on all six of the victims now, from KVOA.com:
Gifford's husband was scheduled to command the flight of space shuttle Endeavour to the ISS in April, but with delays to the launch of Discovery and this, it remains to be seen if he will remain in command. His twin brother is currently aboard the ISS and has been informed of the shooting.
As to the shooter, he is currently being questioned at police headquarters and should be moved to the county jail later tonight. Police are still seeking a second individual for questioning.
OK.. keeping politics out of this... I had been afraid of this happening for nearly two years. It breaks my heart that innocent lives have been taken and forever changed by one individual, regardless of his motivation for this horrible act. But honestly folks... I'm on my knees here... it is time to step back and realize words can hurt and inflame as much as anything. It's why I'm so grateful for the no-politics rule here, so we can discuss matters as civil people and not have our political affiliations divide us.
Thank goodness for the 'Crap and for the spirit of peace and friendship here. If only the whole world could learn the same lessons.
Keep everyone involved in your thoughts and, if so inclined, your prayers. Truly, they are in need of them tonight and going forward.

Yes the no politics rule is one of the best things about this board. I've been on other boards where politics are allowed and it leads to nothing but 20+ pages of bickering. Anyway my thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in this senseless act. Also wish Rep. Gifford a full recovery. And kudos to the two bystanders that stopped this maniac who should fry for this. Those guys are heroes in my book. And John McCain sums up my opinion of this sick bastard "Whoever did this, whatever their reason, they are a disgrace to Arizona, this country and the human race, and they deserve and will receive the contempt of all decent people and the strongest punishment of the law,"

I, too, love the no politics rule. Which is funny as I like discussing politics. But it just doesn't work on a large-ish internet community unless everyone has the same beliefs. And good luck with that. Makes me grateful the most heated arguments on this board are about TNA. Also, the birthdate of the girl is f***ing freaky.

I so want to believe Gifford will be fine, but man... through and through her brain? That she is still breathing is a miracle. I would feel almost greedy asking for more.
As for the shooter... frankly, put him in a hole and leave him to rot. Son of a gun is probably praying for the needle anyway, so why should we give him what he wants? He didn't show mercy to any of the innocent.

I'm currently in an argument on another board where the poster refers to her as a congressman...even though she's a woman. Would you call a woman delivering your mail a mailman? I can understand using gender non-specific terms like "representative" or "senator" or "mail carrier," but you can't call a woman a congressman. That makes zero sense.
