Uh, nowhere in that article does it say she was jailed for what school she sent her kids to like the title suggests. Just another case of altering a story to make the legal system sound more evil than they are.

Their father didn't live in the district, it was the mother's father. And I know this thing is being turned into a race issue, but I'm not going to brand people racists because someone who was legally in the wrong is being prosecuted for it. There's no real technicality about it, she committed fraud, despite her intentions. Oh, I don't argue that she did wrong and should have been punished. I just think that the punishment went overboard as a felony charge was overkill. The prosecutor knew that the felony charge, despite the limited prison term, would have destroyed her life entirely. Considering that the prison term was only 10 days, that indicates the act itself is not that severe. She could have served 10 days for misdemeanor charges as well, but according to the judge he recommended such a course but the prosecutor insisted on tagging her with a felony charge knowing that it would be either a lifelong sentence or it would essentially exile her from her home state. That is just cruel. The cost of the schooling was over $30,000, so I don't think her act was a minor crime. Neither is perjury, which she was responsible for when she convinced her father to file false court documents on her behalf. Yeah, it does prevent her from being a teacher, and that sucks for her. But those are the risks she took when she chose to commit fraud when she had family in the district that she probably could have had a real living arrangement with to attend the school. The way this story is being presented is horribly deceptive.

Yeah, I do feel sad for this woman. Here you have a horrible school system created by parents that don't care, and she does, and she gets jail for it. Granted, she was in the wrong, I don't dispute that at all. But, unless you have the money to send your kids to Parochial School, move to the suburbs, or have a good charter school, there aren't many options for quality inner city education.

She falsified documents and broke the law at the end of the day, if it was an equally as illegal crime but without the involvement of children this wouldn't have been given a second look.

Stuff like this is why education in the US is failing. I say privatize all the schools and let parents be parents and send their kids to whatever school they choose. Will that cost money for the parents? Sure but technically you are already being forced to pay for public schools whether you have kids or not. I'm going to have a hard time criticising this without straying beyond the 'no politics' rule. But education should be the concern of a society, not a business out to make money. And without a curriculum, and guidelines, you open yourselves up to numerous problems. Faith Schools in the UK are serving to segregate people into their own closed communities. Children are being kept from being exposed to new ideas and lifestyles either through lessons or just meeting new classmates from different walks of life, primarily because their parents don't want them questioning anything. Luckily, because the vast majority of schools are state-run, this isn't a large problem, but it is a growing one, and I feel sorry for the kids who are exposed to it. If all schools were privatised, it'd become a shopping mall of ignorance. Don't like evolution? Pick this school, it's all about Creationism! Think that gays are nasty? Go to this school, we'll explain to your kids why they're evil! Think that English lessons aren't as important as real subjects like maths or science? Pick this school, we don't teach English! Want to learn English, but really, really hate Jane Austen? Pick this one, it doesn't have her books in the library! Choice is all well and good, but submitting the educational system to the free market is as big a gamble as the financial ones people take on the regular free market, and we all know how that turns out. I don't believe it is societies business what a parent teaches their kid or what school they send their kid to. I agree on a lot of your points. I think kids should be taught a lot of stuff and not sheltered. But at the same time I don't want to tell parents what is best for their kids when it comes to education. That should be left up to the parent. Do you think public school curriculem is really all that great? I went to a private school and a public school. The public school wasted my time and could not teach me near as well as the private school. I agree there are bad private schools but the public schools are no better and usually worse and we are being forced to pay for them.

I think it's sad that people can't sympathize with what she did. Just because something is illegal doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong. Should she have been punished for it once caught? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean we have to look down upon her just for trying to give her kids a better life.

There are child molestors who have gotten shorter sentences.

[Obedient Citizen]SERVES HER RIGHT!!![\Obedient Citizen] Ten years in prison is absurd. There are child molestors who have gotten shorter sentences. She got 10 DAYS. I find it absurd that a crime that is so heinous that it gets you a whole whopping 10 days in the clink should completely destroy her life. Drunk drivers, who take lives in their hands, can have their lives completely unaffected by their conviction in a year at the most (and they probably spend less time in jail than she will). THAT is what I find unforgivable.

As someone who graduated from a school in the so called "Corrider of Shame" that Obama ran for president on...I'll just say this one thing...I completely understand..
I really want to go farther in depth on this but I know it'll go against the rules....it's just f***ing ridiculous how PUBLIC school districts can be so damn different as far as one being a safe and better learning environment...

Everyone was in a bad situation with this. I just wonder if the school district was the driving force behind pushing for the case (and thus no plea or lighter sentence) or if the DA were just out for blood.

Damn you mother for wanting a better education! How dare you not want your kids getting involved with the wrong crowd, get into drugs, or have a wasted education. Serious I think I'm going to privatize my kids to be honest and I honestly hate private schools but long term it really is a safer course of action.

Just another case of altering a story to make the legal system sound more evil than they are. Yes, but she wasn't jailed for sending her kids to a different school. She was jailed for committing an act of fraud. The article spinning the story to act is if she's being thrown in a cell because she chose a different school for her kids is what's bugging me. That being said, 10 years is a ridiculous sentence and I'm all for people getting mad at that, but let's get the facts of this straight.
