So, this movie just randomly popped into my head, and I realized that aside from a couple of friends, I don't really know anyone who legitimately enjoyed this movie.
Nobody even seems to really talk about it anymore. Not even Final Fantasy fans. So is it that forgettable? I thought it was definitely a huge achievement in CGI for its time, but beyond that, I thought it had a pretty good plot, good characters, good acting, and a good score.
So yeah, while it's not one of my favorite movies ever, I DO really enjoy it.
What about you kids?

It didn't seriously wow me at the time, but it wasn't a "bad" movie. While there could have been a few more elements connected to the video games, it worked on its own as a decent sci-fi flick.

I haven't seen it since it was in theaters, so all I remember is that it was
1. Pretty 2. Didn't seem like Final Fantasy very much at all 3. Was very dull

Yeah, I'm still not really sure why the Final Fantasy name was attached to it beyond name value, as the only real FF connection was Cid...but it was spelled Sid.
But yeah, it was really pretty, and I thought it was actually pretty good, regardless of the CGI.

I think it would have had a better reception if the name "Final Fantasy" wasn't attached to it.

I thought it was a good film but it didn't feel like Final Fantasy. They should have based the CGI FF movie off of one of the most popular games. Nobody wants to see a film about a bunch of forgettable shmucks, they wanted to see a movie featuring guys who they recognise from one of the games. At I did anyway

I remember seeing this with my then partner at the cinema and both as us raging afterwards that it just wasn't a Final Fantasy film.
There were no elements that made me think FF at all, no magic, no summons, no monsters that were recognisable and no actual fighting beyond a bit of gun play.
The villain of the piece was decent, but that was about all we liked.
Afterward I got it on DVD and on second viewing, agree with some of the posts above; namely that if you took the FF name away it was a decent sci fi film with some great moments and decently written characters, voiced very well.
AC was the better Final Fantasy movie, but SW was the better actual movie, once you get over the nerd rage that it wasn't really FF.

So great.

I'll have to rewatch this. I literally only remember a woman with medium length dark hair looking at pretty things, possibly including some sort of bird, and an old scientist.

Honestly, I don't get why people are bitching about this film not being a Final Fantasy film. We don't have a concrete list of requirements for ANYTHING to be Final Fantasy.
Hell, most of the games don't have anything in common, either, and especially nowadays, the games themselves seem to be leaving the magical stuff to the past and are focusing more on different themes. Like FF13, it was based in a highly technological world, not that unlike of Spirits Within, and now Final Fantasy Versus XIII, that game takes place in real world Japan for crying out loud!
Final Fantasy is just a name, folks. Aside from certain shared gameplay mechanics, there is nothing that connects most FF games besides the name Final Fantasy.
So, in that regard, Spirits Within is a Final Fantasy film.

Little stuff that's become a sort of trademark. Beyond those things, FF games really don't have anything in common, story-wise. That's pretty much what I meant.

I don't care that it didn't use all the common Final Fantasy elements... it just felt like a mediocre movie. And, as an early CGI film, the people fell squarely in the uncanny valley.

Even after getting past that there was no sword play, which was what I was really looking forward to in a movie called Final Fantasy, I found the movie to be rather forgetable and boring. It was an incredible achievement in CGI, I just wish they would have picked a better story to tell with some more interesting characters. What I would have liked to see what some spell casting, sword fights, monsters that are from the game, and maybe one summon in the grand finale. Perferably Bahamat. As it stands now, I don't remember much about that movie. And to me, that is the worst kind of movie, one that leaves no impression.
