I don't think it's so much as ring rust as it is Punk just playing it safe because he's just coming off an injury.

It's a move that could (and has) break someone's nose if it's done with too much impact, so no doubt there's pressure on Punk everytime to hit the move as carefully as possible, at the expense of it looking like s***.
I'd honestly just ditch the move and have Punk use the Anaconda Vice as his only finisher.

After looking at it a few more times, it really doesn't look that bad. Punk was probably just a little rusty and I doubt Cena has taken it too many times.

He was scared that he might break the nose of the poster boy for WWE and end up in the doghouse™.

I'd honestly just ditch the move and have Punk use the Anaconda Vice as his only finisher. Cody Rhodes had a gap in his teeth for quite some time, and I'd heard that it was because of a GTS from Punk. It's a move that's just not easy to make look good while also doing it safely, so yeah, I'd rather he just got rid of it.

It looked bad because Cena put his arm in front of his face AND Punk didn't move his leg very fast.

The GTS just doesnt look legit. sure, it would be one of the most painful finishers if it was real, but that's a hard move to do safely and make it look realistic.

I love Punk. But the GTS very rarely looks as impressive as it should.

Cena wants to have the monopoly on all Fireman's Carry signature maneuvers.

The only times when Punk's GTSs looked lethal was when he'd hit it on John Morrison. But to be fair, Morrison can make any move look deadly with his selling.

Considering KENTA's original Go 2 Sleep was a pretty sloppy knee strike to the heart or lungs...this one...it didn't look too bad. Just really off on both guys' part. Punk needs a finisher that he can perform smoother on the hosses of the WWE. I know he can't use his Pepsi Plunge because of his "Keiji Mutoh-like knees", but, when Punk was in ROH, I remember seeing him use a pretty sick Michinoku Driver to an opponent coming off the ropes. I think that would be a great "out-of-nowhere" type finisher. I always thought CM Punk was too small to be able to pull off the GTS right consistently. KENTA is smaller than Punk, and he's always made it look absolutely devastating. The only exception, I can think of, is the botched G2S he did to Kobashi.

CM Punk should honestly get a new finisher. I'm not really complaining and I don't mind if he keeps the GTS, but he needs to either do it better or scrap it.

Because Punk's GTS always looks like crap? Exactly. Now I wasn't always the biggest fan of CM Punk. I really saw him the way Michael Cole (kayfabe) sees DBD. He has since won me over with great promos, solid matches,, and entertaining character traits... but the GTS was never a good idea to use in WWE. The same could be said for Kaval with the Warrior's Way. Most of the time, it looked at least painful, but in the E it looked comical at best. Trying to pull off a move like the GTS on bigger guys convincingly without actually injuring them has been a failed experiment. It must stop now. Just have him use the Anaconda Vice or a flying WTF or something else. Only Evan Bourne made the GTS look lethal and... wait... Come to think of it, where is Evan Bourne? Screw it. The move just sucks. I chose Snitsky.

I don't think Punk has ever done a GTS that looked right.

I think the problem with the GTS might lie in Punk's knees. He can't squat a 260 pounder low enough to get any kind of momentum, leaving him to try and muscle him up with just his arms, . Its hard to lie all the blame on Punk though, because THEN he's got to throw a decent looking knee without killing a dude who hopefully takes it correctly. Punk's knee goes where it goes, the other guy has to take it but protect themselves, and a lot of the time they're too cautious.
Edit: You know what, I just went back and watched it, and compared to some other GTSs, Cena just didn't sell it well. Punk did it just like he always does, Cena just didn't fall forward into the blow he protected too much so the knee looked light. It wasn't that bad though.
