Probably the reality tv background crap.. Who cares.. The guy sucks. Im sorry. And the only reason he is champion, is because he's a company guy who just happens to be around during a time when the talent pool is slim. You put him the territory days, the Federeration years, or Attitude era when talent was stacked, no one would have even given him a 2nd glance. No way this guy would probably even of been giving an IC run much less a world title run The same argument could be used about wrestler that were legends in the territories and that people will not give a crap now Honestly, I can't see any reason to compare two different eras that has been way different to rate a champ Sure, raw has the same ratings, but you can't judge a title reign with ratings after only like 3 weeks of his reigin, in one more year, or even 2 months after we could really said if he was a failure

There's a lot of people who remember that loudmouth on the Real World who acted like he was going to become a professional wrestler someday... and now here he is, the WWE Champion. It's a great story. Bingo. I'm really not sure why the OP is so confused by this. Miz was a very memorable person on The Real World which was around before the days of 10000 reality shows with disposable casts. Not to mention that he was on a ton of other shows like Real World/Road Rules Challenge and Fear Factor.

I only vaguely knew of Miz's background when he first showed up a few years ago.

Whether you watched the Real World or not (I never did) it's an inspirational story. The Miz proves to people that if you work hard enough at something, you can make your dreams come true - despite all the naysayers. This is the type of story that transcends just professional wrestling and reality television and can inspire all sorts of people from all walks of life.

He's a reality-tv goof who actually made it to the big time.....and proved himself.....and won the big one.
It's a bit of a cinderella story. Just remember how awful he was when he first debuted on tv....constantly flubbing simple lines and being a crappy wrestler. Now a few years later he's a main eventer on the A show of the biggest wrestling company in the world. That's certainly newsworthy.

I think Miz's personality helps alot.
When he's been on British tv like for Blue Peter, he's always been entertaining to watch and shown bags of personality.
Unlike other guys like Batista and Big Show who have appeared as a guest on British tv shows in the past (Think Batista was on Paul O'Grady) and they were just boring. Monotonous, not very exciting and seemed unsure of what to say.
Miz however was fun, he joked with the presenters, made smart comments etc.

Monotonous, not very exciting and seemed unsure of what to say. This is pretty much it. WWE has a lot of champions who can wrestle a great match or cut an intense promo. But doing a 30 minute sit-down interview is something else entirely. It's not easy to hold the audience's interest for that long. With his reality background, Miz has more experience at that than just about anyone else in the company.

The Fed is pushing him as mini-Cena. Surprises me, but he could be around the top for awhile. when he does real-world appearances he is just a hardworking guy. They did the same with HHH when his star began to shine post-Hogan. Always need more than one. Of course, this means Miz must make some straight-to-CD movies soon. Sometimes, when filming, the guy gets time off from the main job, so that allows a title switch. Eventually he will feud with his manlove assistant and that will turn him face. Like Edge, he won;t need to stay, just flip for awhile

He's really entertaining and always seems to be having boatloads of fun. I honestly know less about mainstream media than Vince does, so I can't comment on that but I can say that most of my friends do know who Miz is, just from his Real World days. I was talking with my friends a few months back about the Real World, and one of them, knowing I'm a wrestling fan, was laughing about "that dork Mike" who thought he could be a famous wrestler. All of them were shocked (and kinda excited) when I told them that not only was he with WWE but was the US champion.

I'm really going to be the first to do this?
Okie dokes.
Because he's AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWESOOOOOMMMMMMMME!!
To be honest though, I know, as with all wrestlers, that he will never convince every naysayer (hell, nobody is ever going to convince me that Rock was ever better than Triple H or worthy of a main event spot, or that Kevin Nash should have ever stepped near a wrestling ring), but the dude is the epitome of climbing the ladder.
How many people do you see on reality shows spouting garbage about how they're going to do this, that or the other and actually go on and do it?
How many guys do you see go from being the annoying Smackdown host to annoying Diva Search host to bit part wrestler right the way up to World champion, working hard to improve all the way? Especially in modern wrestling where guys generally need to make money in a position fast or prove that they can help other guys achieve that goal, it's such a rarity.
I couldn't bear him at first, then I noticed in the Hardyz vs Miz/Morrison match at a draft show a few years ago how much his basics in ring had improved and I respected him for that improvement, and now since he split from Morrison he's blossomed into a spectacular heel. The crowd loathe him and want to see him get his ass kicked. His promos draw major heat and like any good heel there is an element of truth in what he says (his achievements not being respected) and while he is by no means a ring general, he is more than surfaceable and capable of good matches. He's riding the crest of a wave and like all the opportunities he's had is taking the ball and running with it.
All that is why he's getting a little extra mainstream attention. His achievements so far and the way he's gone about them set him out from the crowd he first achieved fame/notoriety in.

I have a friend who always thought wrestling sucked, and only knows three wrestlers. Hogan, Rock, and Miz. She saw him doing an interview and decided to tune into Raw last week, and she really enjoyed it. Miz won't usher in a new boom period, but if he'll attract some casual viewers who probably wouldn't watch otherwise then he's doing a good job. Every buck counts, after all.

Because he's the Miz...And he's AWWWEEESOOOOOMMME!
Miz does have a lot of connections to various media outlets. Doing PR for the WWE opens those kinds of doors. He does attend a lot of A-List parties. Miz knows how to get himself over and he's doing it.

I am starting to believe he may keep this belt until Wrestlemania because I dont know if anyone including John Cena can promote the product like he is at this point. The ratings may not be shooting up but he is becoming one of the faces of this company before our eyes like it or not.

Have you heard him talk? No, seriously. Aside from all of the other really obvious stuff outlined in this thread, the guy just has an actual personality. He's one of those people who is capable of being a media star. In fact, he already was before he started wrestling. This is just the logical continuation.
It's hysterical to me that people are still doubting Miz and putting him down. Then again, I suppose The Rock and Stone Cold had their share of detractors. Oh well.
It's gonna be a rough decade for you guys.

yeah...because when theres alot of talent "company guys" or a guy who "sucks" totally would have never been even given an IC Title run.....and before anybody complains about my putting DDP in there...i always liked page, but the general wrestling fan base seems to hate him for being really basic in the ring, and alot of people say the only reason why he was a main eventer was due to his friendship with Bischoff...so im just using page as an example of how people think. You know I just realised. For all those comparing Miz to The Rock, he's actually closer to DDP. Solid but unspectacular worker, good if not particularly groundbreaking on the mic, worked his way up from nothing, praised due to his passion and love of the business, half the people love when he's given the world title and the other half think he doesn't deserve it at all.

All these people who describe DDP make me feel like they watched Raw in 1998.

It's gonna be a rough decade for you guys. I normally dread wrestlers making PR appearances on non-wrestling shows as they usually end up making asses of themselves by being in character, or be made to look foolish (think the Sky Sports News guy no-selling Ric Flair's figure-four). So far Miz has managed to avoid that pitfall. When he's been in character (Blue Peter/Nickelodeon awards in Australia) he's been gold, and his appearances on chat shows and the sports podcast a while back have been entertaining and insightful. Like I said before, he ticks all the boxes to be Vince's perfect face of the company wet dream.

He's a young, charismatic individual who has worked hard, is a good company man, and has some mainstream appeal.
He's basically a heel John Cena.
