I suppose i just want WWE to mold more into a ROH based company. They have DBD, KavaKi and Blackie McTylerson so I dont see why its such a crazy idea to have a more pure future in WWE. Honestly? They're getting there. The current roster is as good in-ring, on average, as many past ROH rosters IMO. They've also taken a cue from ROH in adding more international flavor while avoiding straight evil foreigner characters. With the loss of HBK, WWE realizes that they will need more strong in-ring competitors to drives DVD and PPV buys.

Because it's not what made them pretty much the only game in town in the US. And it's not what the people who run the company like. Doink the Clown and Skinner didn't make WWE what it is either. It Vince McMahon being more television-savvy than other promoters. plenty of heavily promoted tv shows and movies have failed. If Vince didn't find an audience for what he was selling it wouldn't have worked. And he was able to find a bigger audience for characters than other companies were for straight wrestling.

It's not a crazy idea at all. WWE's always had incredibly solid wrestlers on thier roster. They just know the big money is with the "superstar". They keep the workers in the mid card and sometimes bump them to the main event to keep the pure "wrestling" fans, and use the bigger names/personalities to draw the "casual" fan. And that, as they've proven for years, is a successful business plan.

Except even then people weren't lining up to see IRS or what have you. They were lining up to see guys like Hogan, Savage, or Flair.

One thing I don't like is the weird names, lot's of them sound like they were pulled out of a hat. In a few years time Wrestlemania will be main evented by Ropey Bucket v Porky McGowan.

To each his own, but I'm of the opinion that we need more over-the-top gimmicks. It's 50% of what makes pro wrestling fun. There's a limit, though. I don't want to go back to 1995 and have clowns, garbage men, evil dentists, tax collectors, workout fiends, ninjas, teachers, and plumbers.

Enough of the ripping on Doink or an evil clown as a gimmick. Heel Doink as done by Matt Bourne was over, Bourne leaving and the face turn is what killed Doink.
Any character no matter how absurd or over the top can get over, else how do you explain Undertaker?

Over the top gimmicks are what got me into wrestling, they're also what kept me watching. Even back in the Attitude era there were guys like the Godfather, Val Venis, and Gangrel. Now virtually everyone is just some jerk that you'd see in a bar downtown. Exactly this. Crazy characters are a big part of what makes wrestling fun. It's pretty sad that the WWE is so bland nowadays I mark for Sheamus in a crown.

I think gimmicks are a dieing art, and in my unpopular opinion...they should be. I prefer the personalities more, they seem more real to me.
It's 2010, times have changed.

I think Mick Foley said it best that the best gimmicks are really just extensions of the people portraying them.

The original Mankind was not Foley's choice of gimmick. As is, Mankind became a multiple-time world champion after he became an exaggerated Foley in a mask instead of a rat-raised piano prodigy.

Be fair, that's just Foley being intensely terrifying. Personally when I think 'gimmick' I think of the 'Wrestling Doesn't Pay' stuff like IRS, Repo Man, Doink, etc.

I agree that I like to see guys whose gimmick is just an extension of their personality, but they have to, you know, find a personality first. It took Cody becoming "Dashing" before he was interesting in the slightest. Randy had to become "The Viper." I'm still waiting for Drew, DiBiase Jr, Ziggler (still the worst name in WWE history), and every single member of Nexus (sans Barrett) to actually find some kind of personality and expound upon it.

As the character evolved more into the "lovable dork" Mankind rather than the psychopathic version of the character, more and more of Foley's real personality showed.

If a lesser wrestler'd portrayed the Undertaker we'd be mocking it to this day.
