Jeff being signed by this company in the first place was a bad idea, but putting that aside:
* There are aspects of his heel character that work for me. Unfortunately for TNA, they have no strong babyface to work with him. Granted, Anderson's concussion didn't help matters, but RVD and Angles were put out of the picture due to booking. Nothing against Matt Morgan, but you don't cement the heel turn of a once beloved babyface by having him feud with a lukewarm babyface who just turned himself. This turn would have worked a lot better in WWE where he had far more over babyfaces to work with.
* Yes, it is stupid to put the title on someone awaiting drug charges. TNA just shows a lack of professionalism here.
* Given the rumors of him working impaired, keeping the title on him was just horrible negligent. Let's say for the sake of argument that his little misadventure at the last PPV was just due to exhaustion. Then that proves that the guy physically isn't up to the rigors of being champ and that he should be sent home until his health improves. In no circumstances should he have worked the PPV, let alone retained the title.
So yeah, it was a bad idea, no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, it was a bad idea for reasons everyone has already stated. Plus, it made no real positive impact on the product or the ratings.
That said, I don't think it necessarily ends in a huge disaster. They're not likely to get shredded in the mainstream media for it because TNA is relatively unknown outside of wrestling. Plus, I'm still doubting Jeff does any significant time...or any time, at all.
So, a dumb decision they're likely not going to have to pay a significant price for, basically.

I think the resounding obvious answer to that question is YES. It was an absoloutely terrible idea.
Not only did you HIRE him KNOWING he was facing all of those charges....but then you made him the FACE of the COMPANY and your CHAMPION!
How is that in any way a good idea at either end. And now they are wanting to bring in older brother Matthew who is seemingly also a little screwed up as well.
TNA is ran by morons.

It's tough, because it spawned a great character. I think though, what they could have done was have that character come into TNA immediately and use him as a special attraction, instead of the head guy of the company. Have him in title matches, but never win the belt, at least until the drug issues are passed him.

Hes currently a heel, in a more adult oriented promotion as say WWE and their current PG image, I dont see the bigg fuzz, the character works well even if you implement the drug charges to it.
He needs a better face to feud with, thats for sure, I still think they really made RVD a wimp for not going after him after he went tru abyss, he was the logical choice after Anderson got injured, not Morgan.

Its bad as champion that he could end up in prison and have to forfeit the belt without putting anyone over. TNA already did that with Rob Van Dam earlier in the year and having two world champions have to forfeit the belt in a row. It makes the world title seem like it really is not that important and when it is the top thing everyone wants, it makes everyone else look worse for wanting it. Plus you have to think that if someone gets arrested in WWE, they lose the world title and can be suspended for it. It makes TNA look truly bush league and national companies normally don't want to be associated with companies that have extremely bad PR. I really don't understand how people could see a man who could go to jail while world champion as a good thing, no matter what the character......but I have obviously been proven wrong.

guilty plea notwithstanding yes. Jeff's heel character is actually not too bad, BUT the problem with everything is that the 2 main faces now (Morgan and Anderson) have been feuding with Bischoff more than Hardy. In that sense, it would've been a better idea to put the belt on Angle, Pope, AJ, or Anderson (even if the whole concussion angle wouldn't have happened) because they can talk for themselves and really get the crowd to hate them and want to see them get beat up.

Can we even speak in terms of hindsight when Hardy is still the TNA champion?
Anyway, it's a crummy PR move on TNA's part to have put the title on someone facing drug charges. That said, Hardy has REALLY gotten into the character, and even if his in-ring work is weaker than it's ever been, his character work is arguably his strongest.
So yeah, it was a bad idea and shouldn't have been done, but I'm enjoying the character anyway.
That belt looks like ass though.

Yes.
Becuase, why would you make a wrestler, who may be going to prison in a few months after winning the Title, but consistingly letting him keep the Title.
I do'nt get it. Just give it to Morgan or someone and if Jeff goes to jail, it won't seem forced.
H'es not drawing shit as champion. He's a drugged up guy who needs help.
Why did they make him champion in the first place? The could've made Anderson champion, atleast he can cut a good hell promo.

Horrible choice. The potential risks (which are about to be realized) seriously blew the benefits out of the water. I just wonder who came up with the idea to make him champ in the first place. Because it's just horrendously stupid.

Anything outisde of the parameter has never been an issue with me. Maybe that's why I still like Mell Gibson. But it's not a factor of if I would enjoy someone's creatvity less if they are doing stupid things outside.
The main issue for me is that I think the promotion's Top dog, the champ, should be the most entertaining wrestler in your company, the one people are more interested to see. And while Hardy has done a solid job in his heel character, he's not the best at anything in TNA. Hell, if TNA wanted to push a character like that they might as have given the strap to Raven. Also he's not even supported by a strong concept as Immortal is a weak rethread.

In retrospect? It was an idiotic move to do and we all knew it even BEFORE they put the belt on him. The guy was being indicted! THAT SHOULD NOT BE YOUR CHAMPION.
