R. J. MacReady- Rewatching the thing, I was astounded by the psychology of this character. He is a loner in every sense of the word, but steps up and leads a group of terrified, paranoid guys against a nearly unstopable alien force, and does it damn well. The Punisher-His methods are extreme, but his vow that no innocent would have to suffer what he and his family suffered, is something I can respect.

Forgot one: Even though he is a really bad guy, I just love him, for stuff like this: "Only in a world this shitty could you even try to say these were innocent people and keep a straight face. But that's the point. We see a deadly sin on every street corner, in every home, and we tolerate it. We tolerate it because it's common, it's trivial. We tolerate it morning, noon, and night. Well, not anymore. I'm setting the example. What I've done is going to be puzzled over and studied and followed...forever."

Santa Claus. Some people don't like him because they claim he represents the overcommercialization of Christmas. However, I always saw him as a personification of love, giving and good will toward others. He represents a childhood magic I'd love to have back. I don't mean to get sappy or anything...but this is actually a beautiful post. I like it.

A few more:
Omar Little and Snoop (The Wire): The coolest Robin Hood-influenced character on TV and the scariest tomboy on TV.
Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski: He's a bum, but a likable one.
Light Yagami: Well, he thinks he's doing the right thing, give him that.
Daffy Duck: Specifically, the Chuck Jones version.

I'll just go with top 5 from 2 of my favorite franchises...
star wars
5. r2-d2- Even though this little guy only communites in beeps and whistles, he has one heck of a personality! Always there to bail the good guys out of trouble and there thoughout the whole movie saga.
4. han solo- Possibly the most well known non-jedi/sith character of the series (along with boba fett). Represents the anti-hero who while seeming to act for his own benefit, really has a heart of gold.
3. yoda- Funny, wise, and kicks butt at the same time! He proves that siz matters not.
2. darth vader/anakin skywalker- The "main villian" and center of the movies plot. While palpetine was the master/emperor, vader was the one causing chaos and the one everyone really feared. While he may seem like a monster, he is really a man fallen from grace, trapped, but is redeemed in the end. Main thing that keeps him from #1 is some annoying aspects from the prequels.
1. obi-wan kenobi- While yoda may have been funnier and maybe a better fighter, obiwan could match his wisdom and was more identifiable as a hero who was truly selfless. Also while anakin was the "chosen one", obiwan was never tempted to go dark and the only one who could beat a in his prime "vader". He remained interesting thoughout all 6 movies. His death affected luke the most, however, even years after his death he would continune to influence luke to become the man/jedi that saved the galaxy.
harry potter
5. neville longbottom- If you would been asked who would be a major hero in book 7 while reading 1-4, you most likely would not say neville. The boy was accident prone and clueless at times, and was easly picked on. However with the incouragment of friends, he was able to find his confidence and become a great wizard. "Almost" became the chosen one himself, and like harry he had to grow up without his parents raising him. His act of killing nogini the snake led to the death of voldemort minutes later.
4. hermione granger- Can be considered the brains and conscience of harry potter. Harry was only able to get most things done with her help and despite prejudice for being muggle-born, she proved her worth tenfold.
3. ron weasley- Somewhat the "han solo" of the potter series. He always felt overshadowed (by his brothers and harry), but was able to prove his own worth in the end. He was harry's first true friend (and best) leading to harry's strenght in companionship. Always there to lighten the mood and loyal though and though.
2. albus dumbledore- The great, wise, and funny old wizard. He seemed to have the answer to everything, and mentored harry to become the man/wizard he became (also after his death too). Also proves that even the best of men make mistakes.
1. severus snape- While some might consider snape to be more of a bad guy, he was truly a hero in the end. I do love his snide remakes to harry though! While he may have been a deatheater, I do not think he ever truly wanted to be "all-powerful". Like harry he was loyal to dumbledore though and though, and was the only one to block his true thoughts from voldemort himself. While he sure acted like it, I do not believe he ever wanted to hurt harry (he did save him a couple of times) and deep down cared for him.
