He's pretty cool with his outrageous backstories and wild comments but when he's doing verbal gymnastics just to go off an a little tangent he had prepared it's just embarrassing. Exactly! I don't mind the crazy backstories, I LIKE that someone adds SOMETHING, and it kinda reminds me of Heenan when he would make s*** up and Gorilla would call him on it. But setting himself up so he can do his prepared bits is just terrible. It doesn't sound right. Get with the other announcers and maybe have then try to work WITH you so they say what you need them to say in order to go off on your tangent. Striker really does have the ability to be decent, but he's gotta stop forcing it. I agree with the whole forcing it thing. It's getting to point where the other commentators are calling him out on it on air. For example, that one time he called Gail Kim's dropkick a "Jumping Bomb Angel Double Stomp". It seemed like he wanted to make that reference, but couldn't do it in a way to where it added to anything, so Lawler just made fun of him for it.

I liked him before. But I fell in love with him even more the other week when he said something to the effect of "Okay I'll just stop calling the match and tell stories instead" THAT made me laugh my ass off

But the move was the Jumping Bomb Angel Double Stomp and not a dropkick. she jumpd off the top rope and extended her legs whilst making contact

It's kinda weird to hear all the Striker hate given how universally praised he was in 08-09.
IMO Stanford is the best play by play guy in WWE and Striker is the best color guy.

Cole needs to become a manager or the GM, because he is ruining matches. He almost destroyed Beth vs Layla last week, and almost ruined Daniel Bryan vs Swagger at Old School Raw. on this point: i've had to watch all DBD matches on mute b/c Cole was just ruining any enjoyment i was having from them. and Striker has bothered me since they were all openly bickering multiple PPV's in a row at the announce table, COMPLETELY ignoring any and all action going on. that pissed me off.

Striker is actually trying to call things.
But stupid Cole just goes cutting him and trying to make he stay quiet.
He is giving some backstory to to the jobber from Del Rio match and Cole just goes and cuts him, calling a goofy

To me Matt Striker is a beacon of hope, a lone voice to the disenfranchised who do not inhabit the cosmos which Vince Mcmahon has masterfully created. My great fear is that his tendency to over-analyze could be his ultimate undoing - and has left him open to denigration from his broadcast colleagues time and again.
Case in point from yesterday's Smackdown: His suggestion that whilst applying a hold to JTG, Drew Mcintrye was symbolically facing his back towards the object of his affections - as opposed to the reality of the situation in the ring at that precise time. This, along with his fatuous injury speculations and abstruse 1980's references are all cause for concern. It is my earnest hope that he does not become the Larry Merchant of this generation, a once unparraleled commentator devolved into gibbering nonsensical lunacy.
Perhaps it's just a phase.

The thing is, while I heavily agree about the calling of moves...that is a directive of Vince. Vince does not want them calling the moves. He wants them to, "tell stories." Its why Joey Styles always had heat with the company and eventually took the WWE.com gig.

I forget which match, but I'm positive Striker made fun of the play-by-play guy after he made up a backstory for someone. I guess its only okay if Striker makes it up?

I don't hate Striker or anything, but he was better on ECW.
The thing is, he just seems to make references or comparisons that make you think "WTF?"
On Smackdown, he compared Heath Slater to Matthew McConaughey, which while he tried to justify it, was just weird. But even worse, he called Kaitlyn "Ralph Wiggum-like".
Now, he's supposed to be madly in lust with Kaitlyn, as far as I can tell. So why would you compare a girl you think is hot to a semi retarded yellow cartoon boy? That baffled me.

Yeah, Striker was a douche the whole time to his new young boy announcing partner Jack Korpela. Korpela dropped a gem about Tyler Reks being a hunter in his free time, except he doesn't use guns, he uses his BARE HANDS, and Striker called him on it and ripped on him for a minute or so, asking him what he hunted with his bare hands and stuff, it was actually pretty funny. He also made fun of everything Korpela did whenever he could, including his high inflection, hand gestures, just anything he could to put him down. I gotta think Vince is having them do this 'announcer conflict' shit to get people talking, ESPN was doing that for a while with Sean Salisbury and John Clayton, and more recently with Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, getting in these shootish spats where they would get personal and threaten each other over their respected football analyses.

I think he'd do well in a commentating team with CM Punk. He has the science, Punk has the funny, and they both have the interesting.

A lot of thoughts here, it's really simple about Striker.
He CAN become incredibly great, but his story reminds me of Vince Russo (as an announcer, not a booker). Like Russo, with his own tangents, Striker sounds like a damn babbling fool who tries way too hard to be distinctive. With someone like Vince McMahon in his ear, Striker will get better because Vince will harness his enormous creativity and imagination.
Another big criticism...Matt, stop abusing hyperbole. Ever read "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"? A dude who oversells everything isn't able to captivate an audience when it really matters. He still has to figure that out.
