It was right before Bragging Rights 2009, when Team Raw was doing a promo, and Kofi just starts speaking without his Jamaican accent. Triple H kept bringing up how they exposed him as a "fake Jamaican"

I'm glad he dropped the whole "being Jamaican" thing. He should be able to be over by just being himself. As someone with African parents, I know I would want to be able to rep my own heritage.

His gimmick is an exotic chocolate man.

My only regret is that they never had a Barbados Slim Angle with R-Truth.

He was within striking distance of becoming my favorite wrestler. Once the Orton feud ended, he basically disappeared.

I never understood why he couldn't just be Jamaican and not have an accent. Just say he has Jamaican roots.
I know plenty of people from Africa and Guyana who have no accent whatsoever.
Hell, I'm half Italian and cant speak a lick of it.

The better question is why his intro/'Tron/lights are all still "Jamaican" colors despite all of his gear and new shirt being red, white and black. because Kofi changes ring gear at every PPV it seems like, then wears it till the next PPV. Like in November when he was wearing blue and white. And there was a period where he was wearing red and yellow.

They pretty much changed his hometown first. Why, don't know. Then he lost the accent when he started feuding with Orton. Unless the Orton feud started earlier than I remember (which it might have), he lost it just before that feud. It was directly before, or maybe AT Survivor Series 09 when everybody on his team were in the ring, and Kofi's talking sans accent, and somebody (HHH, I think?) goes "wait, didn't you used to have an accent?" And that was how it was explained away. Personally, I didn't mind it too much and I thought it was a funny way to handle the loss of the Jamaican part of his gimmick. You have it mostly right. It was right before Bragging Rights and DX were going through the members of Team Raw. Kofi gets on the mike and preaches team unity and asks if their are any questions. HHH chimes in with "I have a question. In fact, I have a big problem! Aren't you supposed to be Jamacian?"

It was just so Mike Adamle could make that joke. That's the only reason.

They never should have dropped the "Jamaica" gimmick.
And NEVER should have allowed HHH to comment on the accent change publically.

The only thing I'm confused about when it comes to Kofi, is how the hell can somebody get the elevation he does when he leaps.

That was the funniest Triple H moment for me. He was saying what we were all thinking.

I'm glad it was just forgotten about. His Jamaican-ness seemed way too gimmicky rather than being a nationality. It seemed straight out of the 80's.

I thought they dropped the gimmick because they wanted to have as diverse a roster as they could to appeal to fans everywhere. Like how Big Zeke is no longer from Harlem, New York (that change in billing happened around about the same time if I remember right)
As for right now, Kofi's gimmick is basically 'Black Rob Van Dam'. He's over, he does some semi-cool highspots but he's sloppy as hell.

"You Ghana make me crazy?" WHAT CHU NO BOUT GHANA FATBOY? Can't his gimmick be an african that happens to like jamacian music/culture ? I think that's how the announcers explained it: they mentioned he was actually from Ghana, but embraced the Jamaican lifestyle.
