First of all, I think everything thats unfolded over the last several months is ultimately the plan of the Anonymous RAW General Manager. Nexus is just the beginning.
The Anonymous GM is Triple H. Since Triple H has been off of TV in real life hes been playing a more prominent role backstage. In kayfabe, they could also say the same thing.
No one knows Triple H is the General Manager besides Vince McMahon, who thought Nexus was acting independently when they attacked him. He is unaware of Triple H's plan. The GM communicates directly with Michael Cole, Wade Barret, and CM Punk, although they are unaware that it is Triple H.
The Nexus is unaware of what The Bigger Picture actually is. They function as mindless drones following orders.
The "Bigger Picture" has 3 parts:
1) The complete elimination of all WWE main event wrestlers that have been prominent since 2005/2006, including John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Jericho, Big Show, etc.
2) The securing off major WWE championships, or at least most of them. This functions as a symbolic reminder of their power.
3) The removal of Vince McMahon from power and Triple H becoming the new WWE Chairman to recreate WWE in his image.
Once all of the main eventers are eliminated, theoretically, buyrates, ratings, ticket sales, and merchandise sales would all go down. With the WWE being hurt financially and Vince McMahon out of commission, the WWE board of directors would look towards Triple H for leadership, with his rise to power over the last few months behind the scenes being the first part of that.
Eventually, the WWE Board of Directors would put Triple H as the new Chairman of the WWE. (I have no idea if they can do this in real life, but in kayfabe lets say they can.)
Notes:
-Beginning with NXT Season 1 Triple H had moles behind the scenes to make sure things went right. CM Punk and Michael Cole have been in on it since day 1. Punk was sought out because of his manipulative nature, as Triple H had seen with SES. Triple H knew he would make sure things would go right, but is also intelligent and greedy enough to stick with the plan for his own benefit, and Triple H's. Cole is pretty much just keeping an eye on everything from a close point of view and reporting back to Triple H. Cole also functioned as a scout in the second season, reporting back that McGullicutty and Harris were suitable members for Nexus.
-Punk was behind the scenes encouraging the rookies to stick together and planting the idea in their heads. Punk and Regals rookies were particularly easy to influence, and a group mentality began to form. Wade Barret slowly emerged as a leader, and Punk and Regal stepped back slowly.
-After the initial Nexus attack on RAW Triple H more or less let things unfold naturally while keeping a close eye. Daniel Bryan was eliminated from Nexus not because of showing "remorse," but because of his already established reputation. Triple H needed mindless drones to do his dirty work. Bryan wasn't really a "rookie," and could get by on his own, thus was removed from the equation before he could ruin things. The other members were eliminated after messing up, as Triple H isn't tolerating failure.
-CM Punk was placed at the announce desk to also keep a close eye on things and step in if need be, which he did after the first incarnation of Nexus failed to eliminate Cena. Punk was put in place as the new leader. Nexus is aware that this was the RAW GM's call, but are unaware that Punk has always been part of the plan. They think he just hates Cena and came to them with the idea.
CM Punk is Triple H's hand-picked new representative for the WWE. Triple H sees Punk as a young him, and wants to mold him in his image.
-Wade Barret has been removed from The Nexus after failing. Barret also became too ambitious for his own good and ultimately started to focus on himself rather than the Bigger Picture.
-The Undertaker being buried alive was part of the overall plan.
-Alex Riley is part of The Nexus secretly. He is there to keep an eye on The Miz. Miz was who Triple H wanted to win MITB so they could keep him in place. He is allowed to be WWE champion for now. In the event that Wade Barret had won the WWE title Riley would have stopped The Miz, but since Miz cashed in on Orton Nexus let him. (Note: Had Miz not won MITB Nexus would have intervened. They were backstage waiting just in case.)
How I see it playing out over the next few months:
Orton vs Miz happens at Royal Rumble without Nexus interference. Punk wins the Rumble with help from The Nexus. If Punk doesn't win the Rumble, Triple H places him and another Nexus member (maybe 2) in RAW's Elimination Chamber match to make sure he wins the title.
Triple H will reveal himself as the RAW GM before Wrestlemania, but won't reveal his involvement with Nexus until Wrestlemania or after.
I'm sure there are holes in this theory but thats what I got.
