I guess the internet boom.
Other than that, really nothing. I find a lot of stuff from this generation to be utter garbage

The Comic Book Movies. Pretty much all of them. Even the ones that suck, I can get some unintended laughs out of, or find something worthwhile in spite of the suckiness around it.
Daily Show/Colbert Report, and ancillary materials associated with those shows (books and s***).
Lonely Island songs/short videos.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (I don't know if it's really a cultural phenomenon, but it's a show I like a whole bunch).
Early Adult Swim

- The big time emergence of cable tv shows (Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Eureka, White Collar, Warehouse 13, etc.)
That may not be a cultural phenomenon, but it's become a big deal.

Doctor Who has gone from being something that only a small minority of people kept alive to a smegging cultural phenomenon and the centrepiece of British TV. This would be part of my bigger theme and that's more mainstream acceptance of British TV. It made Ricky Gervais a star, gave us two really good comedy shows out of it, launched hundreds of copies on our side of the pond and introduced me to Top Gear. So I go for that.
