Now did he really want Micheal dead or was he actually duped by Roth and company as he stated?
Being Fredo I'd lean towards "duped" but I dunno, I've seen this flick a million times but I can never seem to catch the minutiae of what's going on.
Seems Micheal of all people would know that he's really a dope and didn't mean to have something bad happen, but he still went ahead and had him dispatched, that seems kind of cold. Just seems to me he went with business before family which really seems off character.
No wonder that was his biggest regret in part 3 when crying he says "I killed my fathers son".

Michael told him "Don't ever take sides against the family again", so......

That's the whole point, to show how far Michael has fallen since the first film. Michael has become cold and uncaring since becoming Godfather.

The whole thing with Michael is interesting in the second film, because in comparing him to his father, one has to wonder if all the depressing events in part 2 would still have happened even to Vito.
Because while its easy to see Michael as flawed and more ruthless than his father, we don't see the full extent of Vito's ruthlessness, at least not like we do Michael's. We see snippets and him in his final days as a loving patriarch and grandfather, but how many murders and robberies was he responsible for to such a comfortable place?
One could say the real difference is that Michael simply had much more to lose and people to alienate that his father (a man who largely got a clean start in America) ever did. Yeah Vito never had to resort to putting a hit on his brother... but maybe that's because he didn't have a brother to turn on him.

Fredo was a weak link. Michael knew that anyone with a brain could get to him through Fredo. He had him killed so others wouldn't have the chance to kill him or wife and kids.
Not saying it's right, and it's slimy, but it was just business.

It's not like it's the first time Michael has said one thing and done the opposite. He did it with Carlo. Fredo could've killed his wife and children and since Fredo has resented Michael being boss and having his role marginalized even further, he's a prime target again to be used against him.

Thing is, Fredo was really dumb. Like, borderlining on retarded, and I think the reason Michael had him killed is because he felt it was way to easy to get to him through Fredo.
Fredo was a massive liability, which is why he was sent away to Vegas so he didn't f*** up anything, but still managed to. Michael honestly believed that it was in the best interest of his family's safety. Still doesn't make it right, but I think that's why he did it

Michael probably also thought that if Fredo wasn`t made an example of that many would see this as a sign of weakness. I am guessing that his enemies would have then targeted Tom Hagen to do business with.

I mean family or not, that's just unforgivable...even if they hadn't been in the mob I bet Michael would've done SOMETHING to him.

In the remake, they'll have Fredo shoot first.

I wonder what would have happened if Sonny hadn't died in the first film and took over instead. I have a feeling he'd be even worse than Michael.

I know it was you, Frodo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart! ... Frodo: They said there was something in it for me, on my own. Sam: I've always taken care of you Mr. Frodo. Frodo: Taken care of me? You were my gardener, you take of me?! You ever think about that huh? Did you ever once think about that? Send Frodo off to do this, send Frodo off to do that. Have Frodo be the "deputy mayor". Send Frodo to greet people in Bucklebury. I was the ring bearer Sam and I was stepped over! Sam: That's the way the Shire wanted it. Frodo: It ain't the I way wanted it! I can handle things, I'm strong! Not like everybody says... like weak... I'm strong and I want respect!

I think the "business" would have collapsed due to Sonny's rash decision making. Definitely would've been a lot of Corleone casualties but less kinslaying (been reading A Song of Ice and Fire, hadda use that word at some point)

Funny watching Godfather III just now and probably the best stuff in that flick is that Micheal flat out knew it was a cold thing to do to kill Fredo. He was really busted up about that, more so than I remembered.
