It was the right booking and the right promotion, and the right audience. Everything just fit. Didn't matter that the guy couldn't work a lick, he had the charisma that almost everyone in WWE is dying for right now.

Bit of shameless self promotion that might help this thread a bit. www.angrymarks.com/index.php?ArticleID=3096That's an article I wrote years ago about Big Daddy for Angry Marks. Might explain things a bit more to people unfamiliar with him. Thank you, that was a really good article. I'll second that. I hadn't realised that he almost had a career in Rugby League, maybe that explains why his Nephew is now an international in the sport It was even more interesting to read that he was once in shape. Finally the "Joint Promotions Mythical Champion of all Mankind title" should make come back.

Plus, his real name was "Shirley". He had to overcome the odds since birth.

The article was based on research I was doing for a book on the history of wrestling and wrestlers in the UK, and after I ran into a bunch of obstacles with publishers etc I decided to at least get some of the research out there. Now I've started work on the book again though, so hopefully this time it'll come together. There are other articles I wrote about guys from the UK on Angry Marks if you can find them. Kendo Nagasaki, Giant Haystacks, Mark Rocco, Alfred Hayes, Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid.

Pretty much he and Giant Haystacks happened to be the big guys when wrestling got it's first slot on British TV. Before that, wrestling wasn't popular or well know outside of the north west sideshow scene, the UK is too small and pro wrestling was too obscure to have territories, at the time there were 3 tv stations in the UK and wrestling was never on them, no cable or regional TV (aside from the news). So in the early 80s when a wrestling show finally got onto TV (ITV from memory) the main eventers of the time were for 95% of the UK the first wrestlers they had seen so I guess they stick in the memory. Thesedays even UK fans who remember the era view that time as rubbish compared to overseas wrestling and the era only lasted a few years before cable/satellite serivces arrived exposing those of us who weren't into tape trading to Hogan and co.. You're kidding me, right? Wrestling was a massive part of World of Sport, and had been on TV since the 50s. Mick McManus, Jackie Pallo, Kendo Nagasaki, etc. were all big names on TV before the Daddy era.

I remember the wrestling being on every Saturday before the football results and it not being very good. I also remember Big Daddy being on Jim Il Fix It and tagging up with a 7 year old kid.
I'm sure I watched something on channel four years ago were Kendo Nagasaki was unmasked.

And oddly, this seems to predate that:

And oddly, this seems to predate that: The first unmasking was in a match. The second one was a proper 'official ceremony' so they could milk it.
