Yes it lead to the lame Uber patriotic Lex Luger face push and that damned bus.
But just the event itself was pretty awesome. You had not only some of the biggest faces at the time trying to slam the big man, but also some athletes from the NFL, NBA and NHL giving it a shot.
Lex Luger's arrival in a helicopter and wearing the stars and stripes was a huge mark out moment.
From what I remember it was free for the crowd to watch, so it must have been. Fun day

I loved all of this, the slam on the ship, Lex, the bus. It was great.

Who else attempted to slam Yoko? I remember a few WWE stars and some other athletes...anyone have the list? Were there actual matches held on the Intrepid as well?

I never cared for it. My (American) girlfriend HATES it and found it horribly patronising and jingoistic and can never sit through it when it comes on one of the DVDs we're watching.

The highlight for me back then was former UConn and then-Hornets player Scott Burrell. He, uh, turned around and hightailed it.

Actually I just found this: The following wrestlers all failed to bodyslam Yokozuna: Rick and Scott Steiner, Tatanka, Bob Backlund, Randy Savage, and Crush....The following pro athletes all failed to bodyslam Yokozuna: Joe Morris and Peter Taglianetti (Pittsburgh Penguins), Scott Burrell (Charlotte Hornets), Bill Fralic (Detroit Lions), Regy Roby (Miami Dolphins), George Martin, Joe Smith, and several others including a jockey

Peter Taglianetti...such a random hockey player
Anyway...I have a friend that was there and claimed the entire crowd chanted "HOGAN, HOGAN, HOGAN!" as the helicopter circled and landed, but the WWF edited that out of the clips.

Sadly, the crowd wanted Hogan.
Luger was no babyface, and Vince really had no desire to put the title on him for even a week, let alone a day. I wish Vince hadn't tried to create a new Hogan, and just went in a different direction if Hogan was indeed really going to be gone at that point. Although, I'll admit without the US gimmick stuff, maybe they should have pushed Crush. Then have him turn heel on Savage as planned, and setup Mania with Savage costing Crush the title.
Hindsight is 20/20 though . . .

Crush was pretty over during the first half of 1993 vs doink and Michaels. Its a shame he didnt get a decent main event push even if he never wins the title ( well that happened to Luger). I watched the best of RAW seasons 1&2, and apparently crush injured his back and then got squashed by a banzai drop 4 times, and savage only called him twice but Mr Fuji called him everyday turning him on savage.
I'd say Crush went downhill pretty much after that. It was pretty stupid when savage beat crush at WMX. Vince should of pushed the guy, destroy savage and then face Bret during the summer.

I'm surprised they never televised this event, only showed so many highlights, guess cause it was on July 4th, Vince couldn't get USA to air it

The best part of the whole thing is that Yokozuna would eat from a big bowl of white rice in between the attempts to slam him. I always found that hillarious.

Would have been REALLY weird if
1.Doink slammed him. "Clown vs Sumo at Summerslam- anything can happen in the WWF"
2. if the Ultimate Warrior came back against Yoko.
3. Marty Jannetty slams Yoko
4.Vince cuts Scott Steiner's Hair and transforms him into Big Poppa Pump.

Would that mean we wouldn't got that "faaaaatttt ASSSES" promo he cut on Team 3D 15 years eariler any at Yoko instead of 3D?

If they had cut Scott Steiner's hair and called him big poppa pump in 1993 could have replaced Hogan in the WWF.

I remember thinking it was Hogan in the chopper but I actually became a fan of Lex "USA" Luger & the Lex Express pretty quickly. I even was hoping he'd win the title at Wrestlemania 10 since I was there.

I don't recall anybody playing for the Penguins by that name. There was Joe Mullen. That would make sense because he and Taglianetti were the two Americans on the team.

It was Joe Morris, the running back from the New York Giants, if I recall.

I wish they would've televised the whole thing, but I guess even Vince couldn't get a time slot on Independence Day

If Warrior did it, it would be like a long promo from the Warrior for 15 minutes from him and the build up for their feud would be odd, Yokozuna giving a promo with pig and fake Japanese and the Warrior just rambling.
