It's very simple: The NWO worked at first because people thought the WWF was now invading WCW. Make no mistake, the way it was framed was not that guys like Hall and Nash were debuting in WCW....they were invading from the WWF. The whole aspect of the NWO being some sort of separate company was one of the first major missteps in the angle. Was there anyone who seriously thought that, especially once it was obvious the members were simply on WCW's roster? I wonder if the angle would have progressed differently at all if not for the injunction that required Hall/Nash to make clear that they weren't a part of the WWF. Maybe not, but ya, that original perspective was quickly lost - that they were really, in fact "outsiders". I didn't really buy the dueling t-shirts for very long after the angle started - the announcers really tried to hype it as the ultimate betrayal or something if a guy put on an NWO t-shirt, but whatever, it was just a t-shirt and a heel stable, it's all still WCW.

didn't catch the beginning of the nWo. I got into WCW, and wrestling in general, again in the middle of '97. I never thought of the nWo as a seperate company from WCW, but rather as a group of huge stars with huge egos trying to take it over from the inside. At the time, I thought wrestling was 100% legit. I HATED the nWo, and wanted to see them beat down at every opportunity. Except Savage. Face or heel, he's always been my second favorite, after Flair.
It was a great angle, perhaps the greatest of all time. There have been some imitators, but none did it quite as well. Of course, by the time the factions started, it had run it's course, and should have self destructed, but it just kept going, and going, and going... I never did like the Wolfpac. I liked the Black and White better, and WCW best. always considered Lex and Sting traitors for joining the nWo, even if that particular faction was tweeners, then full on faces.

So the problem here is the implausibility of a storyline in professional wrestling? Nothing in professional wrestling makes sense!
