Am I the only one who thinks this? When he first got a singles push by calling out Cena, I thought he was great on the mic. I looked forward to his promos when he was hanging around as a midcard heel, and the bit where he called out MVP a few weeks before the Rumble was excellent.
But for the last year or so... it just feels like he's been declining. I found myself tuning out during his segments more and more often once he became WWE champion, and that bit on the ladder last night on RAW... that was awful. The most by-the-numbers, passionless "I will win my PPV match this Sunday because I *catchphrase*" I've heard from a supposedly "good" talker in some time. And while that was a particular low point, his work for the last few months hasn't been much better.
What happened? Is he being reigned in by the script writers more tightly now that he's considered a bigger star? (Even if that's the case, and I suspect it is, that's no excuse; Cena still brings an incredible amount of enthusiasm and magnetism to even his silliest promos, and Miz hasn't been able to do that.) Or is his act just getting stale? Or am I just getting spoiled by the pseudo-shooting from Punk and the batshit insanity from R-Truth that run-of-the-mill, above-average, competent, by-the-numbers heel promos have lost their luster?
Anyone else feel this way?

I didn't think they were that good anyway. Oh, I know there've always been people who felt this way, but that's not what I mean. I'm curious; does anyone else think Miz's promos USED to be good, and their quality has dropped dramatically over the last year?

I'm curious; does anyone else think Miz's promos USED to be good, and their quality has dropped dramatically over the last year? Yeah. The problem is that he lost the personal touch and quirks. The fantastic promo he did at the first Raw of 2010 (talking about JBL's hazing, people doubting him, his long journey) worked because it felt like him. He was telling his story and what he had done and exactly who he was. A few months after winning the WWE title though... they've become more and more cookie cutter. Most must see WWE champion of all time, deserving of being number one contender, etc. Too much of his promo work feels like you could stick in any general heel and have it fit. I think Miz character wise would work well at this point bringing some of his old hipster aspects back. The fedora, the older taunts, maybe even the shorts everyone once in a while. I'm not saying he should revert, but I think he would be cool as a hybrid of his current and past selves, somebody who's explained that he's already reached the top of the mountain and won the main event at Wrestlemania, and now he'll do whatever he wants. I don't have a problem of believably of "intense" Miz like various others do, but I do think he just seems too serious and too angry about things. I'd like to see a bit of the 2008 Miz, someone who seems to be enjoying himself and being happily cocky about how damn good it is to be Miz.

Miz's best promos are the one's where he doesn't use his catchphrase. Ironic really.

He just flat out sucks. He gives the exact same monotone, try to sound angry promo every single time he gets a mic in his hands.

It's the same schtick they make all their heels do. Every time Jericho comes up with an original thought they try and replicate it 20 times.

I think he's at his best when he's radiating arrogance; I've said before that he worked as the kind of heel he was because it seemed he legitimately believed he was about ten times better than he really was, pretty much the embodiment of a kitty looking in the mirror and seeing a lion. SRS Miz is a bore. He should also have a valet to play off of. Clearly he's a good mic worker, but I really liked the segments he had with the Extreme Expose and the few with Maryse. She could also help to stroke his ego, or bring him back to Earth bust his balls every now and then when he needs it.

"I'm Awesome" must have taken .005 seconds to come up with.
I guess "I'm the BMOC" was taken

I do think that Punk and Truth both being on fire lately is kind of exposing everything that's wrong with the current WWE promo style. Everyone is bland, passionless and more or less says the same kind of things. Miz has never really been any different.

Everyone is bland, passionless and more or less says the same kind of things. Miz has never really been any different. The thing is, Miz was more dynamic at one point. Even during the "be jealous" Dirt Sheet days, he sounded like an actual person and not WWE promo guy. His promos on Cena two years ago seem so of another shade, its hard to believe this is supposed to be the same character doing the standard stuff on Raw these days.

Miz probably has regressed both on the mic and in the ring. He's done nothing for me since the Bryan feud, really.
U.S. Champion and occasional WWE Title challenger? Sure. Main-event fixture? No thanks.

I suppose they are a bit more generic. He's sticking to what has worked for him so far, which is bound to get a bit tedious for some, but in terms of reaching the majority it works. I think his best promo work has been when he had a clear focus (his initial feud with Cena, after his title win). His promo against Riley a few weeks back was good because it had purpose. That said, I don't think it's fair to single out the MITB promo because I don't think anyone could say anything original for that match. They do the same promo each year. He should also have a valet to play off of. Clearly he's a good mic worker, but I really liked the segments he had with the Extreme Expose and the few with Maryse. She could also help to stroke his ego, or bring him back to Earth bust his balls every now and then when he needs it. I don't get why they haven't put Maryse with him full-time. They have terrific chemistry, and it's not like she's doing anything important at the moment.

It's the same schtick they make all their heels do. Every time Jericho comes up with an original thought they try and replicate it 20 times. It's time for the post-2008 heel generator game! 1. Suit 2. Serious in promos 3. Talks slowly in a deep, monotone voice 4. Show little/no emotion Tick all boxes? You are a heel in the WWE!

I don't like saying it because I like The Miz, but I agree. He has two promo's, the catchphrase heavy one, and the 'I proved you all wrong!" one.
I'm not sure if he's declined though, more that they were both a lot fresher when he first started doing them.
All that said, his Jack Swagger line last night was good.

All that said, his Jack Swagger line last night was good. Yeah but it lost a lot of power because the camera panned out, and you looked at Jack Swagger, and you looked at the Miz...and it's clear Swagger is twice the athlete he'll ever be. This coming from a guy who likes the Miz.

I like the Miz, he's one of my favorite current guys on Raw. Seriously getting kinda annoying on the stick though. His whole "Really" thing bugs the hell out of me now(not in the good heelish way either)
