I remember it at the time and I DO remember lots of people being really livid about it, yeah.
I was wishing that Jericho had stayed, but I just saw it as a bit of heel schtick similar to when Heenan left the WWF and I figured he was happy to go with it. Didn't know it was his own idea, but figured he'd okayed it.
Did get a lot of people raging for a week or two, though.

Storyline stuff like that usually doesn't bother me. It's all part of the "love to hate so and so mindframe I keep toward heels" The one time it really bothered me is when it was done to Heenan. I don't but that really got me, If there had been an interwebz then I'dve been all over them. Does anyony have any backstory on that one? Really? The Heenan one bothered you? It was PERFECT. For years and years Monsoon was telling Heenan he was going have him taken out. As Heenan's exit, Monsoon did just that. As great as Heenan was, it's important to remember he was the heel. I was disappointed to see Heenan go, but his exit was perfect. It's Heenan's book whose idea it was, but I don't recall. I know Pat Patterson felt Heenan's bag should be full of bras and panties. Heenan remarked, "I think we pack differently when we travel". It certainly was Heenan's idea to have his gear bag full of stuff he stole from the hotel, though. In hind sight I agree it was perfect. at the time my gut reaction though was like somebody had spit on my grumpy old uncle.

I've heard that Lita's exit was her idea, too. IF that's true, there are a lot of people here who owe WWE an apology.

I stopped watching after this. Not because he lost the feud, I knew that would happen. And not because of how he was carried away, because that was really entertaining and made sense with his whiny, tantrum-throwing character.
But I was bored with the product at the time and only really tuned in to watch Jericho, so that was pretty much it for me.

I was one of those fanboys absolutely incensed about him going out like that, and I don't care if Jericho was the one who came up with the idea, I thought it was a shitty way to have him go out.
But hey, at least he didn't get thrown into a dumptruck or anything...

Really, the only thing that bugged me about the Jericho thing was that him failing Bischoff twice, barely, was a fireable offense, but Kurt Angle failed something in the range of ten times and Bischoff stuck by him up until being cut himself. I'd let Kurt Angle keep failing because he'd whoop my ass.
