Punk only really got to keep it because Heyman fought for it. As for others, it's a mix of factors between WWE wanting to own the names and some names just not being very good. Bryan Danielson for instance is much too long-winded.

Syllables in the case of Bryan Danielson.

I think it depends on the individual's willingness to sign it over and other factors.
CM Punk wouldn't work with another name. Daniel Bryan isn't that far from Bryan Danielson and that's his legit name so WWE can't own it.
Now I'd be mad if I was the child of a wrestler and got stuck with Michael McGuillicuty when my dad was Mr. Perfect. What's gonna me more over? A shitty name or my family name?
That's just a dumb decision and WWE is doing it all of the time now. Use the family name...no reason not to.

"He is the Grandson of Larry The Axe Hennig & the son of Hall Of Famer Mr.Perfect... he is Adopted?"

^Or an illegitimate love child? It basically makes them all seem like a bunch of bastard children.
It really annoys me.

Wonder what Punks "WWE name" would have been

With McGillicutty, they explained it (though it's not true) that he's using his mother's maiden name to try and be his own man. Wonder what Punks "WWE name" would have been Colin Mockridge.

It all started I think with Marcus Cor Von. The guy was signed, and even had an article about him on WWE.com before his debut. It was especially odd that ECW and TNA had around the same amount of viewers, with TNA at the time being in the .8-.9 range due to their timeslot for awhile. So it would seem sensible to keep the Monty Brown name and just build him in WWE.
MVP thought of the name, Montel Vantavious Porter, and even explained the name, like, Montel was based on Montel Williams, Vontavious was based on black women giving their children completely different names instead of names like John, or Andrew even, and I forget where Porter came from.
Some also were like, Mr. Anderson, they didn't want to relate him potentially to other Andersons, so he came up with Kennedy, as Paul Heyman suggested something close to Mr. McMahon's heart. Hell, John Cena wasn't even John Cena in developmental. But yeah, I think Macrus Cor Von was the beginning of that, and if I remember correctly, Cor Von was something important to Monty, and Marcus came about because they messed up the spelling of Marquis so much.
I think the logic now is , have a name that Vince would be able to spell, as apparently he's a bad speller.

The Marquis thing only lasted like a week or two and they were pronouncing it as Marcus anyway, so probably a good call changing it.
Now, if you want a weird name change, Atlas Ortiz just saying one week, "Hey, call me Ricky now."

I still think they'd have been better off trying to say he was Beulah's brother or something. Which would mean his brother in law is none other than Tommy Dreamer - thus instant credibility. WWE misses chances left and right.

bryan danielson......is one. cm punk got to keep his. what gives? 2 different eras. If Bryan had come in to the fold in 2006, he might have kept his real/indy name. On the flip side, if Punk debuted in 2010, I can almost guarantee he'd have a new WWE name. The only guy I know who got to keep his name in the last couple of years is David Otunga. So all guys have to do is get a famous fiancee so their real names can appear on print once in a while (and you know WWE gets a hard-on for any mainstream publicity).

Otunga is such a weird egg in terms of "celebrity" & the WWE. We know he's married to Jen Hudson. He was in the New Nexus & assisted CM Punk in taking over the group. Now, he works for Johnny Ace, & there was never any mention of a fallout between him & Punk, and their history is ignored. I've felt the WWE could always get a funny episode based off of "Punk" Otunga vs CM Punk. They've both used the Punk moniker in mainstream media, and it seems like it's something the WWE would do... but they won't.

Bryan Danielson is too long-winded?
I understand they weren't going to use his name. I'm not upset about that, but too long-winded? THAT'S the excuse?

See, "DAN-IEL-SON" chants would sound too much like Daniel-San, and then they'd give him a Karate Kid gimmick, whereas now they can chant "DAN-IEL BRY-AN *clap clap clapclapclap*."
