I just can't buy the argument that DDP should have broken it or that it was the right decision to have Nash end it. Neither guy was a draw as a top babyface, Goldberg was. Sure there was a backlash against Goldberg, but it's comparable to Cena. If he's making money, why change it? Ratings went down after DDP won the title and Nash flopped in his babyface title run after they ended the DDP experiment. The pop from the Starrcade 98 crowd does not make it the right decision for business. Undertaker beating CM Punk for the WWE Title tomorrow would get a pop, but that doesn't make it a good idea for Punk or the title. It wasn't just the Starrcade Crowd. Nash was on a babyface run almost since the inception of the Wolfpac. I think it's a great idea to every once in awhile let your top two faces go at it.

I agree. Goldberg's streak was DDP's to kill. Instead, they waited way too long to give Page the belt, and had to turn him heel to do it-which killed all his heat. I feel like Diamond Dallas was a fantastic opportunity they lost. So you give it to him and you make Goldberg look bad? If he'd dropped to Page then you discredit Goldberg cause it makes him look like he can't beat anybody but lower level peons. I dunno, it does give you somewhere to go with the character, he can beat all these scrubs, and on his day, he's capable of winning the world title. But he was still fairly new, you could say he lost focus, got overconfidant, something like that, then he can go away, and train that much harder for the rematch, and has more even matches with main event talent. It adds a new phase to the character, he can get to a certain point on raw power, but needs to push himself harder to be a true great. As opposed to, he beats everyone including the main event guys then loses and.... something.

Page's title reign only flopped because his heat was already gone by the time they gave it to him. Read what I write.

I never watched WCW regularly, but I remember seeing highlights of this since I'd watch the first hour or so of Nitro until RAW came on and thinking it was pretty ridiculous.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that Goldberg's streak should have been ended by a Jericho or a Benoit...forgetting that WCW would never have sanctioned the streak being ended by wrestlers they regarded as lesser and considering how the programme with Jericho went Goldberg himself would have refused jobbing to anyone outside the legit main event club.

Goldberg shouldn't have lost to Nash or DDP. We already know the backlash from Nash and the Fingerpoke of Doom. Back then, I was a fan of both men and even I know that ending was BS. The backlash for DDP beating him would have been just as big as the backlash for Nash doing it. I'm a big DDP fan but way too many people still saw him as Bischoff's boy. He would have been given a lot of flak for that, maybe even as much as we give Nash for being a booker when it happened.
They should have picked a midcarder to elevate to do the job. DDP was already main eventing by then. They could have taken any midcarder, slowly built them up and you'd have an instant mega star if they played their cards right.
