I shop at FYE because I created a relationship with the manager there, and I get sweet sweet discounts and deals. He'll match any price, kinda like what Wal-Mart does. I took my friend in, first day, to get thr Star Wars Saga on Blu-Ray. Originally $130 at FYE, got it for $70 because that is what Wal-Mart had it listed as. So, why didn't you just go to Wal-Mart?

They have a decent selection compared to other places. As good as Amazon? No but a hell of a lot better than Walmart.

Freakin friends, I didn't know FYE had a buy back/used program. Maybe that's a good thing because there are better local stores that do the same thing. The local stores also carry the novelties I like.
The prices at FYE make me feel stabby, but I'm not surprised they are still around. Coconuts is the other record store in town and their prices make FYE look like the DAV.

They occasionally have good deals, as well as good prices on used DVDs. Even so, I rarely go there, as most of their prices are outrageous.

There's only one left in my area that I know of, and I avoid it at all costs, even though they do sometimes have decent deals on used stuff.

We had one here but they went out of business do to not getting any business after awhile...That and the fact that no one who worked there knew anything about music past anything popular not to mention not knowing where anything is.

The reason why FYE is still in business is because of the rare stuff they have. Not rare in terms of you can find it on the internet, but rare as in, "Gee, I just got Wrestlemania X-Seven* for free!" Or the GTA Vice City box set of music I got was like $50, and was only a couple of bucks cheaper on Amazon.
*: had gift cards to pay for it.
Personally, it depends on which FYE you walk into. The one in the mall two minutes from my house sucks, but the one 20 minutes away is AWESOMELY huge with tons of selection!

Didnt FYE make all their cd's $9.99 a while ago (i assume the ones that were already under $9.99 remained at the low price as well)? Not sure if it applied to all stores, but that might help keep them afloat.

Well...the comic store I go to sells zombie brain Jello molds, so woopie cushions don't seem that far fetched. Semi Off topic:Does anyone have good advice on making my cousin realize our town will never get a Virgin mega store?

FYE at the South Shore Plaza here closed up this year. I thought the prices were reasonable, especially when they went on deep discount. I bought the Summerslam box set for $80

They have great sales,I got one that was buy one used CD get the second for a dollar. Their metal selection is great, and they sometimes have rare dvd's laying around. I got a Captain America hat there for $4 when it was originally 20. The one in the bigger city is even better,I hear.

To tell the truth, I'm shocked the FYE employees haven't started an uprising and started rioting. From the sounds of it, management sucks and they only stick around for the discounts. (Which knowing the regular prices, they must get one pretty damn nice discount for the trouble.) I know they sure as hell don't stick around for the money.

I managed an FYE for 3 years before my store closed in 2007. It was a good company to work for. To this day I miss my store.
Their focus is on the casual mall shopper, who needs that "quick fix" and trades off saving a few bucks off Amazon to purchase it right there and then. Also, they have albums that a Wal-Mart or Target would never carry. I believe they went from about 700 stores a few years ago to about 300-400 stores currently, and it looks like they are finally starting to turn a profit again.
As for their prices, the reason why places like Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc prices their media so low is for the draw. Wal-Mart can afford to actually lose $2-3 on a hot new release because they know it will bring people into their stores, where hopefully they can purchase other items that they sell at a high margain. A place like FYE can not do that, since that's all they sell.
I still remember the invoices for CDs. Typically most albums would cost the store $11-$13 each, which is where the MSRP is usually $17.99 or so. Hense FYE putting it on sale for $14.99 while Best Buy will have it in their flyer for $9.99. Go to Best Buy every week for new CDs, hopefully remember them when you need that big screen TV. I know this model has changed a bit, because last year FYE did some test stores that every single disc CD was $9.99, working out a deal with the record companies no less, because CD sales are in the gutter.
It still is a fun place to shop. Deals can be found, they have decent prices on used merchandise, and they always have new random stuff like toys, t-shirts, posters, and other entertainment related items. Also their trade in values are much better then Gamestops.

I still shop there because they have a better selection of DVD's and at times I find the sometimes rare and obscure metal album as well.

An FYE in a mall around my area was going out of business recently and marked everything 50%-80% off and I could still get those DVD's cheaper on Ebay and Amazon. I tried to sell a brand new sealed DVD to them that I no longer needed and they offered me $2 for it. I put it on Amazon and got $8 ($12-shipping-Amazon's commission).
I would never buy, sell, or do anything from there. Buying online, while more risky due to shipping, individual sellers, etc, is a much better cost effective option, at least for the DVD's I look for (sitcoms mostly).

They buy back DVDs and CDs, I assume that's where most of the business comes from now. On a side note, I miss Coconuts. They had all the harder to find wrestling DVDs back in the day.
