I don't really see how exactly Vince can pick a next "top babyface" if the previous one is still around. There's no one who's going to get that spot if Cena's still occupying it.
That's true, but it's never too soon to start grooming that next guy. It took Cena how many years to go from "debuting on the main show" to main eventing a 'Mania? A good 3 years, give or take, right? If you start building a Richie Steamboat right now, you could have him ready to take that spot when the time comes, instead of just catapulting him up and expecting him to be ready.
But even then, you can't just pick one guy and say, "he's going to be the future face of the company". There's so many things that could go wrong, the biggest ones being that he simply doesn't catch on with the fans, he gets injured, or leaves the company before WWE can benefit from him. That's why I think this is a very flawed idea.
What Vince should do is just provide an environment where everyone's charisma and ability, provided that they have it, can shine through and the next big superstar will naturally show himself, and that's when they can start pushing him to the moon. But picking a person at random, deeming him as the guy who will carry the company in the future, and then shoving him down everyone's throats will likely only lead to failure. Remember Bobby Lashley?
Personally Vince, you've got CM Punk right there for you and he's almost at that level.
CM Punk is just 2 years younger than Cena and will probably retire before Cena does. Furthermore, Punk is not what a WWE top face looks like. It will probably be some younger guy with an impressive physique.
I agree with most of the names thrown out here like Dolph and Miz and even Steamboat, but I'm willing to go into super left field for this one and say that I seriously believe that Xavier Woods could be a total star and be the guy if given a chance.
Dude has loads of charisma, good on the mic and good on the ring, and it would be something a little different, going with an minority as the guy on top of the company. My only fear is that he gets Kofi'd, where the potential is wasted by yo-yo booking.
You're not wrong, and Woods is awesome, I'm just doubtful of it happening. The dude's got all the potential in the world, he just needs that one thing to put him over the top.
See, that's the thing, I know the guy can do it, he just needs someone to be super behind him and I just don't think that'll happen.
I think he's going to end up a Truth/Kofi hybrid, which wouldn't be bad for his career, but I think it would be a bit of a waste.

The thing is, right now, the undercard and FCW are LITTERED with guys that could be the potential next "THAT guy". You've got Antonio Cesaro, Kassius Ohno, Woods, Richie Steamboat, Dolph Ziggler, Cody Rhodes, Brodie Lee's coming in soon, hell, even someone like Jake Carter(Vader's son), and several other guys I'm forgetting. Now is not the time to pick and choose, but instead to wait to see the cream rise to the top.
Personally Vince, you've got CM Punk right there for you and he's almost at that level.
Punk's 33, and I think he mentioned not wanting to wrestle deep into his 40's. He's on the verge of becoming a legend regardless.
I don't think age is as much of a factor if WWE's really high on a guy; they pushed Batista as the potential face of the company when he was already in his late thirties.
I honestly wouldn't complain. I think Ryback's awesome. Very quick and agile for a big man, great set of moves, a killer lariat and he can be decent on the mic from what I remember.
Came in here to say this.
Though, I don't think Ryback will be in Cena's spot specifically... but I do think he'll be a major main eventer.
Triple H was never THE guy. He was the guy THE guy worked with.
Can't just go out and pick "the next Cena" randomly. These things take time and effort, which they seriously can't seem to spare for most of the roster these days. How can anyone connect with the audience if the booking's conditioning them to not give a damn about anyone that's not in the current main event scene?

I'd like to see Dolph Ziggler & Alex Riley share the role as the top guy. That face off they had last year made it seem like they'd be the perfect arch rivals. Much like CM Punk & Daniel Bryan are the two guys who came up to the WWE through the indies, Ziggler & Riley are only a little over a year apart in age and have both been in the WWE system since day one of their careers.
I could actually see Otunga fitting the role. He's a big guy with a great figure, celebrity connection, well educated, good role model and above all, he seems like a really great guy too.

No. GOD, please NO! NO!
The more you say no, the more they feel motivated to set it in motion. We're doomed either way.
And a new adventure begins for Ash, Dawn, and Brock....Lesnar!
