This was an interesting "console war" because you had 4 systems vs each other as opposed to 2 or 3. Obviously the Game Boy won out and crushed the others but what are you thoughts on this ?

Well, one thing about it was it was unique.
Obviously, Game Boy had the bigger library, more developers, and the better system despite no color due to its battery life.
Game Gear gets props for being the first mainstream color portable, as well as having that TV Tuner....but the battery life killed that. Plus, not as big a library as the Game Boy.
Lynx I don't know enough about, except the same battery/lack of library but even moreso than Game Gear.
Turbo Express...wasn' that the system that allowed you to play Turbo Grafix 16 games on a portable? If not then I don't know anything about it.

It's interesting to me that the Game Boy won because it was technically inferior to the others. The only thing it really had going for it over the others was the battery life and the library (though most of the library was horrendous...seriously, try playing old Gameboy games now, only a few hold up).

Does anybody remember Sega Nomad? That came out towards the end of the Genesis' life and while it was good to play Genesis games on a portable console, it didn't do so well.
I still have my Game Gear. I had only a few games for it, though. I mainly played it with an adaptor plug. It's true, the batteries wasted easily on that thing.

In fact I NEVER played on my Game Gear outside my house. Seriously, 6 AA batteries for what? 5-10 minutes of play time?

Wouldn't really call it much of a war.
The TG-16 wasn't a bad system, though. Not even with just the US HuCard Library. Just that the Turbo Express/PC Engine GT was too expensive for most people to even dream of owning.

That actually isn't too different from the norm. It's more noteworthy when the technically superior system actually does win. Mainly because the inferior console has a cheaper price or wider support. SNES/Genesis - Two were about even in every category. The SNES was a little more powerful and a little more successful. This was about as dead even a race as any. Of course, there were a number of (vastly) superior systems out there but they flopped or were relegated to niche status because of their (vastly) higher cost. Saturn/PSX/N64 - The original Playstation won out in spite of some better hardware under the N64 hood. Though those capabilities were never explored because of Nintendo's stubborn decision to keep to cartridges. DC/PS2/Xbox/GameCube - PS2 wins this generation hands down despite the GC, Xbox, and even DC in some ways being technically superior. Current gen - The Wii is definitely inferior to the 360 and the PS3, yet it's easily the most successful. Portables - The DS is inferior to the PSP, yet it's the best selling portable video game console of all time, and the second highest selling console of all time behind the PS2.

Was there ever any competition between the NES and the Sega Master System? What about going as far back as the Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 or even Colecovision?

Even further back, at least in the US... The NES I THINK was slightly technologically inferior to the Master System, but was VASTLY more successful in the US.

Good graphics don't always equal out to the best sales.

Yes, the NES was technically inferior to the MS. The differences were mostly in the sound IIRC, but you could notice it graphics wise too. It's nothing to be shocked about, though, since it was first realeased years after the NES.

Are we talking about just the third party games or the Nintendo first party ones too? I just mean in general. Most of the games that still hold up were Nintendo first party titles though. Super Mario Land 2 and 3 are still fun, as is Link's Awakening. I'm sure there are some other Gameboy games that are still fun but those are the ones that come to mind. Granted, I'm not counting stuff like Tetris or Dr. Mario because there are much better versions of those games on other systems. Now, if we're counting the Game Boy Color as well, then there's still a ton of great games for it.

I was a Game Gear kid.
It was truly more of a "be tethered to something" device than a portable.
Next handheld system I got was a GBA. It was a good idea. (But I also got a NeoGeo Pocket Color! It was good times.)

The library is so huge that I haven't even scratched the surface of games that I want to play, and I've had one since the year it came out.

Plus even more since it was compatible with all the other Game Boy systems.
