Anybody besides me been putting this off?
I've got so many people that I only fleetingly knew from a single semester of classes (more often than not) or from a group project, or from way back in high school that I barely associated, or way back in my freshman year when we were all like "Let's friend everyone in the dorm!" and didn't think twice about how the only association we had at all was that we lived in the same building.
Yeah, there's still people I associate with but there's got to be easily a pretty number of people of whom I don't overlap with remotely at all.
And yet I still feel hesitant to de-friend them, and I don't know why.
I guess it could be born out of some sort of wanting to hang on to memories, even if I can barely remember what memories I'm wanting to hang on to. I dunno.
I guess it could also be because I have a predisposition towards not throwing anything away, for lack of a better description, and deleting Facebook friends comes just as hard as recycling, say, the cardboard box that Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 came in.
And yes, we know there's at least a few of you out there that don't use Facebook and don't plan to and are better for it. We know. You don't have to tell us.

Why would I go to the effort, unless them being on my list is somehow a job liability or something.

Yeah, my list are full of friends and family I still talk too or see on a semi regular bases. I never felt the need to delete anybody. I've been deleted a couple times. Which I didn't care when it someone who was not a true friend to begin with. Most times I never notice an unfriending. Unless it was one of the by mistake ones. Which happened to me. A friend deleted me by accident. I notice because we messaged each other a lot. Then she was gone. I was like WTF?

I've been wanting to do that for a while, but now I don;t even take it seriously anymore. So I just ignore it.

Honestly, I like to keep my distant friends as Facebook friends and my close friends off my Facebook account, I have one friend who is so freaking nosy. He was always looking at my friends and asking me who this person was. I had to make my friends private because of this.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm so sick of people making a big production out of it. Every few days I see "Facebook purger. If you're reading this, you're lucky." Like....what are you trying to prove?

I've deleted people from my friend list from time to time, but never underwent one of those purges that people boast about. Like the OP, there are plenty of people on my list I haven't seen in ages, but why delete them?

One of the guys I am friends with does that. He'll make a post saying "It's time to delete some friends, those of you that aren't real friends know who you are!" Like, what's the point? I have distant relatives that I have never met, and in laws that don't even like me very much as friends on there. Who cares? I'm just happy that people care enough about me to see what's on my mind from time to time. I treasure every Facebook friend I have.

I think I have 200 or so facebook friends. 50-60 or so I even talk to in a casual capacity. I like seeing people I only kinda know or was friends with back in the day post. Stops you from wondering "whatever happened to...?"

I know somebody who does his purges(or "order 66" as he calls it) every few weeks. He mostly gets rid of girls he randomly added that all of a sudden call him a stalker(since that's what he is) and anybody who points out his delusional, creepy acts.

There are some who I've been meaning to delete. There are some girls I have on there who I had a crush back in my high school years that I think about maybe trying to talk to in order to see if there might be something I might want to pursue. Other ones I can admit that I don't know why I added them.
There are people who I went to school with on other friends lists who I'll recognize and know of, but never said a single word to.

I could probably dump everyone I'd want to cut just by instituting a "copy and paste status meme = insta-ban" policy. Doubly so if the message says "97 percent of people won't have the guts to repost this!"

I was going to say I am lucky I don't have those kind of friends, but its just that I already hid those people from my wall.

It makes people feel important. Like college parties that have guest lists. Some people just have the need to feel important.
