whether American Dad, Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park (the stuff I regularly watch) or seemingly 90% of all TV shows, these constant Star Trek or Star Wars references (oh, and add Willy Wonka & Lord Of The Rings to that list as well) are just too much!
I know alotta people like 'em, but enough is enough!

I get Star Wars because like it or not, it's a pop culture phenomenon.
But Star Trek jokes always fly right over my (and I'm sure a lot of other peoples) head.

I love Willy WOnka jokes. That episode of Futurama is hilarious.
Add Wizard of Oz to your list.

I'm sure far more people are familiar with Fantastic Voyage through references than actually have seen the movie at this point.

I'm just generally tired of TOS (and TNG to a lesser extent) being the only things ever referenced.
Couple of more ST shows were on the air folks, including one a decent number of people think was the best of all (DS9).
I mean mean hell I'd settle for a few Voyager references.

Nobody would get those references though. As much as I loved Voyager (and would probably love DS9) there just isn't anything from that as engrained in pop culture as TOS/TNG. I suppose esoteric references are Family Guy bread and butter though. Crew of Voyager getting lost on the way to a party or something.

Mainstream audiences would only probably get references from the original Trek series and the original SW trilogy. References from the SW prequels and the other Trek incarnations would probably be lost on them. Mention Scotty and people know what you mean. Mention Gul Dukat and they wouldn't. Same thing with Star Wars. People know what the Death Star is. They probably wouldn't have a clue who Count Dooku or General Grievous was.

The only thing that DS9 made mainstream were the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition. Considering the actor who played The Grand Nagus is a recurring guest star on Gossip Girl who is an eccentric and rich tycoon, DS9 may have already been referenced indirectly (on such a 'pop culture'-centric show, no less).
But aside from that, geek-culture jokes are an easy way to lose the majority of your viewing audience. You'd hafta create a show entirely devoted to those kinds of obscure allusions, like The Big Bang Theory or that one show where the nerdy guys play video games all day and never get laid (which is getting cancelled after the first season).

Even still, given how diverse TV and film is these days (to the point we're starting to see Doctor Who references crop up), still unfortunate that pop culture is just mining the same Star Trek material they were 10, 20 years ago.

People in general enjoy things that they can easily identify. Family Guy has survived mostly on making TV and movie references. They forsake plot and humor, but since the material is recognizable, people eat it up.

I'm sure far more people are familiar with Fantastic Voyage through references than actually have seen the movie at this point. Sometimes I think the same is true of It's a Wonderful Life, for younger people who never saw it. Wizard of Oz and to a lesser extent Rocky Horror are other staples of theme episodes.
