Downloaded it for my 'Droid a few weeks ago, I love it. Both the JP and US soundtracks are good imo, though I do have a slight preference for the US one. Still haven't finished it yet though as I'm finding the Meta-Sonic level a bit tricky. But yeah, £1.29 well spent.

My favorite Sonic game, and the only thing that validated my purchase of the Sega Saturn.

Honestly I've been playing it and for some reason I don't care for it as much as the others.

Sonic CD is definately one of the more unique Sonic games, if nothing else. Besides the fact that it was on the Sega CD, I think that one thing that hurt it was that it was released after Sonic 2, when it was supposed to be after Sonic !. Still, I enjoyed it when I played it.
Oh, and to me, Sonic Boom >Toot Toot Sonic Warrior.

I've never played it, but I do consider "Sonic Boom" to be one of the best Sonic songs outside of the Genesis games, easily.

Never played it though.

I've been thinking about picking it up on the 360. Sort of torn between it, Ecco the Dolphin, and the Arkham City skins - only have the money for one.

Great game. I preferred the Sonic games over the Mario games during the 16-Bit War, and this one helped solidify that.

It's the weakest of the classic Sonics. The stages are boring, sparseley populated and generally lack creativity. And frankly the music sucks. Maybe the Japanese soundtrack was better, I've never heard it, but I don't think the American soundtrack compares favourably to the music of Sonic 1 and 2 at all.

Not better than Sonic 2. More like Sonic 1.5.

Way too quick. Best gameplay IMO, but it's not as good an all-around package as Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Hell, not even as Sonic 3 by itself. My second favorite Sonic game at the moment (and I'm a lifelong Sonic fan, since getting my Genesis in 93), considering I am making my way through (and LOVING) Sonic Generations.
The main American theme song is better, but once you get into the stages the JP soundtrack is INSANELY better than the American one...it always confused me that the Past stage songs were the same in both, and yet it was all changed from there.

Japanese/EU soundtrack...pure joy.
And the PSN/XBLA port (the key word being port and not emulation) is beautifully done. Both soundtracks, native 16:9 widescreen support, Tails as an additional character and a brand new engine running the game (don't let you put that off, it's the exact same game from almost 20 years ago). Now...who would like to see a version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles running off the same engine?

Not only is it easily one of Sonic's best games ever, but the Metal Sonic character got utilized fairly well in some of the comic adaptions.
Plus it gave us Amy, who's a good character in her own right but sadly has also sparked a weird shipping war between fans of her and fans of Sally (I'm partial to "SonSal" seeing as I'm a SatAM fan, but they're from two different continuities so it shouldn't be that big a deal).

Which is funny that I also think that some of those SonSal shippers also shipped Amy with Tails pre-Adventure.

Okay, so for someone who doesn't really care for Sonic 3 & Knuckles and prefers the original game, would Sonic CD be suggested?

By original game do you mean Sonic 1? Right. Sorry, might've come off like saying I prefer Sonic 3 I guess. Well it's been a while since I played it, but Sonic CD does have more in common with 1 than the sequels. For example, no Tails and no spin dash as we see it in 2 and beyond. Also, no Super Sonic for getting all the gems (there's a different reward). I'd say give it a test run.

It's $5, so it's not like it's a bankbreaker if you don't like it.
I will say if you're a person that would go back and try to beat it 100% (all "time stones") or would be trying to improve on your best time in each stage (there is a time trial mode with leaderboards...though keep in mind it's only for the "present" version of each stage), then it definitely is a no-brainer.
The only way I wouldn't recommend it is if you'd beat the final boss and then consider it done. The first time I played the game on the Gems Collection (which is a port of the inferior PC version), I almost beat it the first night I had it, only getting tripped up on the 3rd act of the second to last world and the 2nd and 3rd acts of the last world (each world has 3 acts, but the 3rd is a boss fight). Otherwise it took me one evening and the next morning to beat it. When I got the version on XBLA and PSN, I beat it in two sittings in the same evening. Still need to get all the "time stones" though (this game's version of the Chaos Emeralds, though as stated before, they unlock something besides Super Sonic).
Again, to me it's the second best Sonic game and it's built on a similar engine to Sonic 1 and 2. My only complaints are that the game could be a little tougher (even just a "hard mode" setting would've been fine), the bonus stages aren't exactly the best (then again, Sonic 2 is about the only good one), and the time trial doesn't let you do "past" or "future" versions of stages.
I know I've done a lot of complaining and a lot of putting stuff in parenthesis, but I just wanna give ya all the info and my thoughts on it. It is definitely fun IMO, and if it wasn't for having Sonic Generations right now I'd go right back to playing it and improving my times on the leaderboards.
Worth noting though, not to contradict CMWaters, but the XBLA/PSN version has an option for the Sonic 2 style spin dash as opposed to the CD style (CD has you hit the button once and then hold it, as opposed to Sonic 2 having you hit the button repeatedly) and actually defaults on the Sonic 2 style. Also, Tails is in the PSN/XBLA version of the game as an unlockable character (just beat the game as Sonic to unlock him), but it's totally optional. I think there might be a trophy/achievement or two for it, but there's nothing that I know of past that. He can fly Sonic 3 style (not made it far enough to check if he swims) and actually moves a pinch faster than he does in Sonic 2 and 3 (probably to be able to keep up in certain boss fights...not gonna spoil them but there's at least two I'm thinking of where a slower-moving Tails would make them insanely hard).
