Most of their price points were way out of wack compared to Funi, so it's not too surprising.

Sad.
But not at all surprising looking back on a lot of their not-not-so-good-ideas.
No reason to panic just yet, I think. While we are losing another major distributor in the US, they're obviously still open to having others do it, methinks. FUNimation is pretty good about fixing these sorts of situations for fallen companies properties.

I wish I could say I'm surprised at gross incompetence at anything related to Namco Bandai's Japanese operations. Sadly, this is par for the course for them lately. I swear that merger was the worst thing to happen to both companies.
A lot of great anime was produced by Bandai in the US, including Gundam and Cowboy Bebop. This is a major, major hit to the anime industry here.
Man, who's even left anymore? Funimation and Viz? Is that really all?

Good thing, I guess, that I imported Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

You could have always bought it and just watched the JP audio with English subs. Not that I've got anything against fansubs, just that I usually find that professional translators are a lot better at it.
Though Haruhi's dub wasn't TOO bad. Not really great, but Crispin Freeman's Kyon made it tolerable.

Yeah, I have the first DVD of the first season - managed to find it for ten dollars as part of an FYI sale - and I just can't watch the show dubbed.

Does this only affect anime/manga, or does it also affect everything else Bandai-related (such as NBGI's video game distribution) as well?

That's awful. On a somewhat related note, the Haruhi dub is absolutely fantastic. If there's ever a third season, it'd suck if it never got dubbed, or didn't have VAs up to snuff with Freeman, Lee, Ruff, etc.

This topic again(it's been all over facebook with my friends). What really irks me is people coming out of the wood work to say "piracy is destroying the anime industry!!!"

Meh, it isn't the end of the world. Honestly I think people are making a bigger deal out of this than it really is.

"Bret screwed Bret" And that's been the case for a lot of these companies going down, blame piracy till you're blue in the face, but shitty business models will kill you just as dead with or without the internet.

Wanna know the really funny part? It's actually sometimes worse in Japan. It's sometimes cheaper for the Japanese to import the DVD from the US after it's released than to buy it domestically. That's why they often slash some of the extras for the US, so as to try to prevent that from happening, so they spite one fan to try to keep the other in line.

Anime DVD prices are ridiculous, yeah. Remember the shortlived Bandai Visual that put out 2 eps of Gunbuster for $60 or something? That's very similar to the way anime is sold in Japan.
I don't like outright piracy, but I still think fansubs have done far more good than harm for the anime industry here in the US. I blame the oversaturation of mediocre titles (especially manga; I'm actually really glad Tokyopop is out of business because of that) for the decline more than anything.
