Actually, DC has poked fun at Marvel as well (remember funky flashman? Or the Extremists?) but whats sad is that both companies used to have respect for each other (i remember marvel giving props to superman's 50th anniversary in 1987). They really should have gone in the format of Not Brand Ecch or What The?!, humor comics that were actually funny (if a bit in-jokey at times). Heck, this story would have been the perfect way to bring back irving forbush. I would not consider The Extremists as making fun of Marvel characters. They are more like the Squadron Supreme (Marvels version of the Justice League). The Extremists are DC's version of The Avengers.

Both companies made fun of each other, but it was usually good natured ribbing. Friendly competition and all that. Marville, along with Jemas and Quesada's rants at the time, was the first time I can remember either company just going straight into mean spirited mockings and attacks.

I'm still confused as to why anyone who reads comic books would give a shit about Ted Turner selling Warner Bros to AOL. in the grand scheme of things that probably had zero effect on the comic industry.

There was no money to be made from this book and even at the time everybody at Marvel knew that. No, this book was published for one single, solitary reason - because Joe Quesada and Bill Jemas wanted to tell Peter David "f*** you" in the most pointless, tasteless, stupidest, overly elaborate and time wasting way possible. And it didn't even succeed at that. They said it a little while later that was done solely to boost CAPTAIN MARVEL's sales (which it kinda did for a little while). And considering Peter David has pretty much been Marvel-exclusive ever since then, and has had regular work (X-FACTOR, movie adaptations, Dark Tower when it was hot selling), the notion that they were seriously telling him that is doubtful......or PAD just REALLY hates DC and every other comic company. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure this comic's artist - Mark Bright - was shuffled right out of comics because of being attached to this.....thing. (He did a Transformers Spotlight issue a few years ago, that was pretty much the only thing I've seen him do in a long time). And Howard Zimmerman - ULTIMATE ADV's writer - went right back to Hollywoodland too, his comics career dead as a result of U-Decide. Actually, DC has poked fun at Marvel as well (remember funky flashman? Or the Extremists?) I never realized the harsh context of Funky Flashman until a few months ago: Funky was a pretty tough parody of Stan, and his assistant/"lap dog" Houseroy was an even more scathing mocking of then-EIC Roy Thomas. Given that it was Kirby doing it, though, I think that DC was able to distance themselves from it. I don't know if either Stan or Roy ever commented on those characters.....

Their most recent high profile endeavor, Frank Miller's return to Batman in "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" was an unmitigated disaster. To be fair, DK2 was basically the only thing DC had to crow about at the time, it was the #1 selling book of '01, which was quite an accoplishment considering every single month of the year besides when DK2 dropped was topped by Marvel that year. Actually it's funny looking at the '01 sales chart, if the title of the book wasn't "X-men" "New-X Men" or "Wolverine" it wasn't even in the top 50 that year save for Green Arrow and DK2.

I bought the first couple of issues of this for some damned reason back when. I think I was just picking up my typical haul, and three of em were out and I thought, eh what the hell.
Just awful stuff.

the really f***ed up thing? Bill Jemas is now the EIC of DC comics (which still puts him below Didio/Johns/Lee in the pecking order... DC comics is weird).
