Doing a proper set of adaptations would probably be a huge uphill battle in terms of sales, if only because the name Oz is pretty poisoned in general by exposure to the movie everyone knows. Not an insult to that by any means, just that no one's going to take it seriously.

I think it would work much better as an AMC or HBO type tv series. If someone did all the Oz books as movies, that wpuld instantly cause the first one to get crapped on by most people even if it was great, and no more would be made. People would be more forgiving of a tv show aimed a a slightly more niche audience.
For some reason the original Wizard of Oz film is like Star Wars, in that it's almost a sacred religious thing.

Funny enough, they are releasing a new, animated sequel with I think Dan Aykroyd's voice in it. Some chick from Glee plays Dorothy.
