WWE will take this no doubt as the show needs more Cena, not that they've done a terrible job in booking potential new stars. If Cena's the draw, you surround that dude with the guy's you want pushed and over. You don't put Cena with Big Show, Kane, etc. Those guy's have hit their ceiling. You book him with guys on the rise like Ziggler, Bryan, etc. You mix and match. Put Cena in tag matches with guys who need exposure or whatever. If you know people won't turn the channel on John, pair him up with these types of guys who need to be seen as stars. It shouldn't be RAW starring John Cena, and then everyone else does their own thing to stop/start pushes.
It's not rocket science.
That said, knowing the long-term damage WWE has caused, the indifference to the midcard would probably STILL trump Cena's draw, and people would still channel flip...

The thing is though, I don't think anyone knew Cena wasn't going to be there that night. If Cena was really the cause of bad ratings, the ratings would have started high and then proceeded to drop as Raw went on as people realized he wasn't showing up. But as the numbers show, the ratings were poor the entire 2 hours. As a matter of fact, wouldn't people waiting for Cena keep the ratings somewhat stabilized? Speaking for myself, if I really wanna see if someone's gonna show, I'm probably not gonna tune away, for the sole fact that I don't wanna miss when they eventually do show up, if they in fact do. Ergo, I don't buy the whole "lack of Cena killed the ratings" thing either.

I can't help but feel that they've lost complete touch with the subtlety of booking wrestling.

Well. If anyone remembers my "crazy" theory from Monday...
Maybe I'm not so crazy after all.
I guarantee they will use this as an excuse, he was there, he wrestled the dark match, why else wouldn't you put him on other than to use the poor rating as an excuse?

Somebody on a website was comparing the ratings of this show to those during the late 90's wrestling boom, and here was my response - I think it's relevant to this topic:

They need to have the main focus be on the WWE Title that's all I'm going to say...Make the main focus Cena and don't have him show up..allll right!!

Cena, Cena, Cena.
No. It was the NBA and Hatfields & McCoys, which I watched and what I'm watching right now.

Is Memorial Day really that much of an excuse? It's hardly a day when people hit the streets in droves to "celebrate." It is a day when people are spending time with their families, and it takes people out of the routine of "ah, dammit, Monday. But hey, at least Raw's on!" It's not a great excuse, but this tends to happen on Memorial Day. Last year's rating dropped too. Also, HOLY SHIT, that many people care about the Hatfields & McCoys, and Pawn Stars?

Hatfields & McCoys on Monday had nearly 14 Million Viewers. So, yes.

RAW's been decreasing in interest every show since WrestleMania. There have been little bits of goodness in between heaps of shit the past few weeks. Also, it was clearly that thirty second video package at the beginning of the show. Obviously it just made everyone so mad, they all decided to not watch the entire show

Well, I can't really be surprised considering Raw put me to sleep. Seriously

Eh, well I at least thought it was a pretty decent episode. Dude, I've come to learn that the ratings seem to have nothing to do with the show's quality. Which really makes sense in a way, you don't know if a show is good or bad until you watch it.

Can we just accept that this latest experiment with Laurenitis just isn't working? The guy just isn't that interesting.
I get they're trying for a Vince II with the guy, but he's so flat out boring. Vince was entertaining as hell, and Johhny just can't fill those shoes.

Anyone recon Cena wasn't there so some dickhead in the company could blame the low rating that was due to memorial day on lack of Cena, Hogan used to pull s*** like that in WCW Someone mentioned this in the Raw thread this past Monday. If it were true, it honestly wouldn't surprise me. In my opinion, if they don't attempt to improve their god-awful product, the ratings are going to continue to slide. Pushing Cena out there for 90% of the show isn't going to fix anything.

The Punk vs. Bryan match lost viewers Well, THAT sucks. It's just the fanbase WWE has cultivated over the years. Triple H, Cena, Orton, Undertaker, HBK, Vince, or bust. Nothing else matters, even the longest reigning WWE Champ in 4 years. Also, they've put that match on TV too many times, not to me but in terms of making it a big deal to watch to someone who doesn't really get into match quality (which is absurd to me, but whatevs).

I think fans in general have just grown tired of wrestling. The product as a whole has gotten stale, predictable, boring, and is nowhere near exciting to the point that keeps people tuning in.
WWE's process of yo-yo pushing is not helping either. Of course, with no competition the WWE doesn't feel the need to change.

The Punk vs. Bryan match lost viewers Unless you're saying that the 10 PM slot lost viewers, then it would be normal considering that the following quarter, which the match bled into, almost always loses viewers.

The day is coming when the WWE drops wrestling all together, and the show turns into a long live soap opera.
