IMO the best Star Wars films have been the ones without having Lucas having much creative control. While the original Star Wars film was good for its time did have some clunky acting (lets be honest here getting many good to great performances isn't Lucas' speciality)

If you read about the various problems involved in Empire's production, Lucas' answer isn't a surprise. George wanted the film a touch darker, but still in line with the adventurous, quick paced tone of ANH. Irvin Kershner's insistence on doing slow takes and a more thoughtful feel really grated on Lucas both because it went against his original idea and because the film was running behind schedule & over budget. Keep in mind he put up his own money to fund it so his objections are not unfounded. That producer (and friend) Gary Kurtz wasn't reigning him simply made things worse.
Lucas never understood why Kurtz & Kershner were perfectionists with the film, and thought that a fun popcorn flick would have been enough.

I'm convinced at this ppoint that Lucas is intentionally being a troll. I think this too.....and I LOVE it. I think its fan-freakin-tastic. I get a kick out of people whining and complaining every time he does something to HIS movies. And I think he does too at this point. Keep on trolling Lucas!

I think Lucas has been trollin' fans ever since the EU retconned Boba Fett dying in the Sarlaac Pit in ROTJ in spite of his insistence that he was. He just gave up arguing with the EU writers and fans after awhile and ceded that Fett was alive.
Then the prequels were made. I sometimes think Jar Jar Binks is his revenge.

Yup his movie alright, not as if Marcia Lucas edited some, or Lawrence Kasdan wrote two, and two different people directed some, they're completely Lucas' films, and even if they weren't I'm sure all four people I mentioned were all okay with the changes.

Point conceded. His brainchild? That's fair. Honestly Lucas does has full legal (if not necessarily artistic) right to do whatever he wants. If he wanted to make a Star Wars pornographic musical comedy starring Waywa Fybot and Jaxxon the Rabbit, honestly I'd have no problem. I just wish we could get the original films in high DVD/Blu-Ray quality without relying on fanrips. Ridley Scott put out multiple versions of Blade Runner but was still willing to put out the theatrical cut too. I just wish Lucas would do the same.

I'm amazed no one's made a George Lucas Trollface yet.

I dunno, it really must be painful to see Empire, a movie he didn't direct, get the amount of praise it does compared to the others that George directed. It's repeatedly said that George doesn't exactly get the best actor performances (I like the Prequels and even I gotta give critics that), but y'know it's still pretty good.

Either George is trolling or this is a flat out made up fake story. George has ALWAYS said his least favorite Star Wars movie is the holiday special...and that if he had the time and power, he'd go to every single person that had a bootleg copy of that film and smash it to pieces! ;D ;D ;D

I would be especially convinced if he said The Phantom Menace was his favourite Star Wars flick. Thing is, Phantom Menace isn't even the weakest movie, that's Attack of The Clones, easily. "I say The Phantom Menace sucked more!" "I say Attack of the Clones sucked more!"
