I don't see why people expect him to turn all evil heel on Punk. Why can't he just be a bumbling middle manager? Someone like that is a lot easier to dislike than another Mr. McMahon, who people have grown to love.
And in a way, you COULD see Laurinitis as the babyface...I guess. I mean, Punk is smarmy, and conceited to a fault. And John TRIES to help Punk, but he often times just can't due to his own incompetence not be cause he's MWAHAHAHAHAHA....

Mr. McMahon does have his fans, but whenever he does something especially bad to a fan favorite, he always gets good heel heat. A more clearly heelish Johnny L. wouldn't be original, no, but it'd give audiences the sense that Punk truly has to fight for his "revolution". There isn't as much tension in the air if the antagonist is just a sad sack.

It was a pretty clear indication of his troll-ness when he actually couldn't help himself from laughing while telling JR he was fired.....(again.)

I still think that was one of the funniest things WWE has ever done, the way he stumbled through that promo while looking at his feet, then just looked right at the hard camera and said that flawlessly was just amazing. That whole segment was amazing. I'm still laughing at him trying to organize a group photograph.

True, pretty much every "altercation" between Punk and Johnny L. has happened because Punk was the one who started mouthy off. Hell, the most villainous thing he's done so far was refuse to give Zack Ryder a rematch with Ziggler after Ziggler won their match. Hell, after Ziggler had already successfully defended it against him twice, one of which was after having and losing another match. Something that kind of bugs me with the Ryder story, he really didn't deserve the third shot yet you were supposed to think he did. And Ryder got pissy over Cena beating him in a qualification match for their respective titles.

If I'm not mistaken, the story was that the fans (the petition) wanted Ryder to get another shot but Laurinaitis wouldn't give him one and I can only assume they did the Ryder getting angry at Cena thing because of bad booking.

No but he is a strangely sympathetic character at times. Probably because he’s a) funny and b) slightly out of depth when away from his usual middle management role.

Instead of getting him the automatic Number 1 contender, he made Ryder wrestle in a qualification match. I'm not trying to play devil's advocate, but that isn't exactly heinous.

Punk really is being kind of a douche. To be fair, that's pretty much his MO in life.

Y'know, remembering an earlier post I made, I actually flip-flopped on this. I did and still do champion JL for being a change of pace from the Mr. McMahon archetype- but thinking about it, he really should still try to get under the crowd's skin more so fans will have reason to believe Punk, and not just dismiss him as a douche (understandably in this case).

They can always bring back Good Ole' Punching Bag Jim Ross.

There was one heelish thing that John tried to do to Punk:
He tried to Montreal Screwjob him when he faced Cena at Money in the Bank.

Laurinaitis was just doing what he was told. Eh, true...but WWE could easily twist it into it being a suggestion of John to Vince, and Vince giving the command of when.

Thats what makes the character so great, hes not "muahaha" evil, hes your average middle management guy, he feels real as everyone knows, has worked under and hated a guy like him, people can relate to Punk.

Punk Vs Laurinaitis = Austin Vs Vince. It's the angle of the rebel who everyone likes vs the system. Because Punk is the main face, anything Ace does that screws Punk despite being good or not is a heel move.

He really comes across as lovably incompetent, IMO; more Mike Adamle than Vince McMahon.

If I'm not mistaken, the story was that the fans (the petition) wanted Ryder to get another shot but Laurinaitis wouldn't give him one and I can only assume they did the Ryder getting angry at Cena thing because of bad booking. The point of the petition was that Zack had pinned Ziggler on several occasions, which should earn him a shot at the title. But Johnny refused to give it to him. Made even more obvious when he gave Morrison a title match for the same reason. Despite Zack pinning Dolph like two times beforehand.
