I really don't see why it's such a risk, especially now that they've built up CM Punk (and have Ryder waiting in the wings to rise the ranks of the midcard faces). Sheamus is an easy stand in for Cena as top face without a title as well, and hell Sheamus actually has beaten Cena on a number of occasions so in kayfabe (at least) he's the better wrestler.
They turned Stone Cold when he was still getting crazy face pops during the InVasion angle and despite how crappy it was Stone Cold as a crazy heel was easily the most entertaining part. His 'WHAT?' chants live on to this day because of it-- which probably confirms that a heel John Cena will end up being a popular face a month or two after the turn due to the inherent charisma from Cena.
Yep. Win-win. The heel turn is seriously loooong overdue now, John.
