...and he's out for an extended period of time, who gets to run with the ball as top face?
Your obvious choices:
1. Sheamus - PRO: He's super over. CON: He hasn't had a real program in months and is floundering in the upper midcard.
2. Daniel Bryan - PRO: He's the WHC and, as such, should be treated like a big deal and makes for a great underdog story. CON: He hasn't yet connected with the mainstream fans and isn't over enough to cement himself yet as a top babyface.
3. The Big Show - PRO: He's been around for years and is consistently popular as a heel or a face. CON: We've seen him on top for years and the Big Show as the #1 face of a brand in 2012 seems incredibly stale.
So with our options seemingly limited, what do you do? Is there somebody else out there? Do you turn a current heel or do you bring somebody over from RAW?

Keep it on Bryan. Let him play a Bret Hart-style face. No nonsense, tough as nails, fighter to the end, friendly to the fans, not a goody-goody, and takes no shit from heels.
The biggest problem is the lack of good challengers. There's Wade and there's Cody, and otherwise, who else? Mark's out on injury and since Cody is IC champ, you really don't want to do that if he's not going to win. So even if Bryan wins against Wade...what, is he a one-feud champion? We need some longevity these days.
Kaitlyn should threaten that she will choke out AJ with her amazing thighs unless she is given a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship.
She does this, until AJ passes out.
Then she starts making out with AJ's unconscious body.
And then Daniel Bryan should come down to apparently save AJ, but then starts making out with Kaitlyn.
Then AJ wakes up and joins them in a 3-way right there in the middle of the ring.
Oh, and then Rey Mysterio returns in the next segment, thus becoming the top face.
Ugh, why would you ruin such a beautiful image by having Rey do the run in?
He didn't say that Rey did a run in, all he said was he would be back the next segment; leaving us with all the time in the world to fully appreciate what's going on in the ring. Also, Kaitlyn is into asphyxiation? Never would have guessed.
But, in all seriousness, I guess they could move the Miz/R-Truth feud to Smackdown and have Barrett in the title picture or feuding with Sheamus until Orton comes back.
