As in, carry the flag if/when in the event that Cena does turn heel. Who would be the exemplary "hero" figure that Cena currently is and be a suitable replacement down the line?

Honestly the first thing that came to my mind. Serious answer, though, would be CM Punk.

It seems as if WWE's hoping it's Punk. Entertaining as he is, I wouldn't go with him as he's got too long a history of douchey comments, but apparently Vince disagrees.

It will probably be Punk or Orton. Rightfully so IMO.

If you mean a "whiter than white" white meat babyface then Sheamus is your fella.
I'll see myself out...

I actually think Sheamus would be the perfect hero to Cenas possible heel persona Jokes aside, I agree. Punk is a douchebag asshole by his own admission, Orton is a sociopath, Bryan isn't established enough to fill the role, and neither is Ryder. That leaves HHH and Show, who're long past their primes. In terms of taking over Cena's mantle as upstanding do-gooder, Sheamus seems like a natural fit.

Based on the way he's been pushed, Sheamus is the best bet.

WWE is hoping it's Punk so it'll either be him, Orton or Sheamus. Orton's too "dark" of a character so probably Punk. Sheamus is good but he wouldn't fit the bill until Punk fails.
Depends when it happens as well. If Cena finally turns heel and faces a crazy face it'll depend on when it is because if it's at the end of next year or even 2013 depending on how popular it is it could end up being Ryder.

it's likely to be someone the fans will also hate as much Miz and Ryder (who the IWC will eventually turn on)

I don't think the IWC will turn on Ryder as much as he's got a Eugene/Santino level gimmick. It'll get him a hell of a lot over (which it has done) but it'll also be his personal glass ceiling.

If the top babyface role includes being something of the WWE's face and ambassador (which I'm pretty sure it will), then I'm giving my vote to Sheamus; given time, maybe also Bryan or Ryder. I seriously doubt Punk's people skills in the role of ambassador, and I dunno about Orton, for some reason.

It's CM Punk plus he doesn't have to be a goody good shows babyface like Cena. As long if he can carry the show and company and has tons of fan support and sells merchandise, he'll be fine. Austin and The Rock were kind of douchebags but every mark in the audience looked up to them wishing they could be exactly like them which is probably by far the most important thing of being a babyface. A lot of marks don't want to be like Cena anymore because they see or starting to see him as a phony white bread babyface while they rather be hip and cool like Punk who is brutally honest, anti establishment, speaks his mind, and having a unique look. Batman is in, Superman is out. Tony Stark is in, Steve Rogers is out.

If they turn him face, it's Miz. The guy has mainstream exposure, has already done quite a bit of publicity work for WWE, and comes across as an awesome guy at those events.

Honestly I feel like 2011 Ryder was 2003 Cena.
Which means 2013 Ryder is going to be 2005 Cena.

I expect Ryder to get more serious later on next year and the beginning of 2013 so he can be a credible champion. Ryder's going through the "Cena phase" or "Edge phase" since Edge himself became more serious from his E&C days.

Does that mean that 2021 Ryder is gonna be 2011 Cena and we are gonna be hearing "LET'S GO RYDER/ RYDER SUCKS" chants?
