Austin didn't need to save Steph as he was already mega over, but it sure as heck didn't hurt him. The Stone Cold character already conformed to the traditional archetype of a plucky hero fighting a corrupt machine, so him having something of a moral code would make sense.
Punk saving an "innocent" character would get an insane pop, and it wouldn't necessarily throw him into Cena territory, as it's Cena's (perceived) self-righteousness that older fans take issue with rather than his actual willingness to do good. Fans are never gonna get sick of good triumphing over evil, regardless of how scruffy the hero is.

It worked so well for Austin because it gave Austin some morality and as a face you really need that, even if Austin might have been the one guy that didn't it still added something to his character. For Punk he could use that moment but it has to be one that is organic to his character. Not something forced. It has to be a situation that just works for Punk to do the right thing.

I could see it working and not feeling forced if Punk were to come to the aid of someone like Jim Ross.

Not participating in the walkout was him doing what he felt was right even though it meant standing behind Triple H.

Not participating in the walkout was him doing what he felt was right even though it meant standing behind Triple H. You mean not participating in a walkout that wasn't his... And no a 'Saving Stephanie' for Punk wont do him any good. And no Punk, at least not with this character, will never be on the level as Austin when he saved Stephanie. Here's the thing. I sit back and remember Austin vrs McMahon and Austin's rise to the top setting him up for Austin vrs McMahon and Austin wasn't against the corporate structure. He wasn't about change. He wasn't about making a mockery out of his opponents or playing to the crowd like a smarmy little douche. Austin was just Austin. He didn't have any big goal or self rightous crusade. He didn't need it. He just did what SCSA would do, the fans latched on to it, and Vince and his goons went after Austin. Stone Cold fought back, took the fight to them, and everything was better off. Punk just kinda feels forced, and making a 'Saving Stephanie' moment for him wouldn't help that. Just like telegraphing Austin passing out to the Sharpshooter with blood pouring down his face and 'manufacturing' that moment wouldn't have helped Austin. Just like it won't help Punk if they tried it with him today.
